Rory McIlroy says he's going to spend the weekend testing new drivers after he missed his first cut since last July's Open Championship at the RBC Canadian Open.
The Northern Irishman had a day to forget at TPC Toronto on Friday afternoon.
McIlroy, 36, only managed to hit four of 14 fairways as he carded an 8-over 78.
The Masters champion's round included four bogeys, one double bogey, two birdies and a quadruple bogey.
McIlroy's quad arrived on the par-4 fifth. From the middle of the fairway, his approach from 134 yards sailed over the green.
After taking a penalty drop, McIlroy needed three more shots to reach the green where he two-putted.
The score dropped him towards the bottom of the leaderboard and a dejected McIlroy continued to drive the ball badly.
His body language was poor, with the golfer often looking towards the skies as he routinely missed left with his tee shots.
McIlroy finally made the decision to switch to TaylorMade's Qi35 driver this week.
He finished the week 149th on 9-over and missed the cut by 11 strokes.
It is the first time he has missed a cut since last July's Open Championship and only the sixth time since he turned professional that he has finished outside the top 100.
McIlroy is now likely to spend a week at home in Florida before heading to Oakmont for next week's U.S. Open.
In truth, McIlroy has struggled for form since finally achieving his childhood ambition of completing the career grand slam at The Masters.
He made the cut at the PGA Championship but failed to mount a challenge for the Wanamaker Trophy.
McIlroy also shared seventh place at the Truist Championship.
At the beginning of the week, where he revealed that he was upset news leaked his driver was deemed non-conforming before the second major of the year, he spoke of a struggle to find motivation.
"It is a concern"
McIlroy told reporters his performance this week was a concern.
He said after nine holes on Friday he had resigned himself to flying home early.
"You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today," he said.
"Still I felt like I came here obviously with a new driver thinking that that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't.
"Obviously going to Oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways. Still sort of searching for the sort of missing piece off the tee.
"Obviously for me, when I get that part of the game clicking, then everything falls into place for me. Right now that isn't. Yeah, that's a concern going into next week."
McIlroy said he now plans to practice very hard.
He'll also doing more equipment tweaking this weekend.
"I was saying to Harry [Diamond] going down the last this is the second time this year I've tried the new version, and it hasn't quite worked out for me," he said.
"So I'd say I'll be testing quite a few drivers over the weekend."
Cameron Champ hits the front
One of the Tour's biggest hitters, Cameron Champ, took the 36 hole lead in Canada.
Champ added a 4-under 66 to his opening 62 to reach 12-under par.
He's two clear of American Andrew Putnam (62) and three clear of Thorbjorn Olesen (70), Richard Lee (64), former champion Nick Taylor (65) and France's Victor Perez (65).
European Ryder Cup hopeful Shane Lowry is in contention ahead of moving day on 8-under.
Champ is searching for his first win since the 2021 3M Open.
He told reporters after the second round the last few years have been rough and it has mostly to do with personal issues.
"It's been a little rough for me to even be out here," Champ said. "I just finally kind of accepted that and finally got some help and slowly working towards that, which has been nice.
"Again, for me it's just a refresher to kind of be free in a sense, to feel somewhat of a freedom.
"I could care less what I shoot. Really, like I said, going through all this and looking back, the result is really not what was bugging me.
"These last two days was just a nice -- not sigh of relief, but it was just a joy for me to be able to play like that. I know it's there.
"I just have to get out of my own way and keep progressing."
