Report: LIV Golf to learn OWGR fate on same day as curtain-raiser in Riyadh
LIV Golf will reportedly be told whether they have been given the green light for Official World Golf Ranking points tomorrow.
LIV Golf will find out whether they have been given the green light to receive world ranking points for players tomorrow, according to a report.
The breakaway tour, which launched in 2022, has been locked out of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system since its inauguration.
LIV lodged an initial bid to receive OWGR points before the landmark 150th Open at St Andrews four years ago but were rejected in October 2023.
The decision infuriated former LIV commissioner Greg Norman and the league formally withdrew its application in 2024.
Norman's replacement, Scott O'Neil, resubmitted LIV's bid before the 2025 Masters.
Several changes have been made to the PIF-backed breakaway's format over the last few months in an attempt to appease the OWGR board.
Save for the team championship, all LIV events will be contested over 72 holes instead of 54.
The change has upset some LIV players, with Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson among those to voice their concerns.
DeChambeau told Today's Golfer that it wasn't what he signed up for.
LIV have also adjusted the points distribution this year, whilst there will be an increase in turnover as more players will be promoted and relegated.
Should the OWGR approve LIV's application it would automatically enable more players to qualify for the four men's majors.
According to FlushingIt, the OWGR will announce their decision tomorrow - the same day LIV begin their fourth season in Riyadh.
The aforementioned O'Neil has struck a confident tone when talking about the topic in recent months.
"We are working very closely with [OWGR chairman] Trevor Immelman and the board of OWGR," he said in December.
"It's likely that will have an impact at some point.
"We are having conversations with Trevor, who is doing an extraordinary and difficult job towards a solution that we hope to have in place by next season.
"There are a whole host of things we are talking through."
When Immelman was asked about LIV's application two months ago, he said the OWGR board had been "working really closely with LIV to make sure we handle this in the appropriate fashion with as much integrity as possible"
He added: "Dialogue has been back and forth and constant, and really in a great spirit.
"I've enjoyed getting to know Scott O'Neil, he's a passionate guy and very passionate about the LIV Golf League.
"While there's been no decision just yet we'll have to see what happens in the future."
LIV Golf signing labelled "disappointing"
LIV Golf endured another underwhelming off-season whereby they failed to attract a bona fide star.
Thomas Detry was the highest-ranked LIV signing.
The Belgian, 33, has joined Dustin Johnson's 4 Aces.
His decision was described as "disappointing" by tour pro Eddie Pepperell.
"I mean, I like Tom, he's a wonderful golfer, but I'm not sure I can think of a more disappointing signing, actually, that LIV has made," Pepperell told the latest edition of The Chipping Forecast.
Pepperell added that he was a fan of Detry but believes the golfer has ruined his opportunity of competing in majors or qualifying for the 2027 European Ryder Cup team as a result of his switch.
Reed replacement named
LIV Golf are preparing for life without Patrick Reed.
Reed stunned the golf world last week when he announced he was re-joining the PGA Tour in August.
His decision left LIV Golf scrambling to find a full-time replacement.
LIV have confirmed Miguel Tabuena will fill the spot left by Reed at their opening event in Riyadh.
