Haeran Ryu shot the lowest round in major championship history on Saturday, firing an astonishing 11-under-par 60 to storm into the outright lead at the Amundi Evian Championship.

The South Korean's flawless display is the lowest round ever recorded in a men's or women's major championship, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 61 and putting her firmly in control heading into Sunday's final round.

Ryu began the day three shots behind England's Lottie Woad but quickly erased the deficit with birdies at two of her opening five holes before igniting a breathtaking run.

The 25-year-old eagled the par-4 sixth before adding birdies at the seventh and ninth to card an Evian Championship front-nine record of 29.

She maintained the momentum after the turn with another birdie at the 10th and closed with four more birdies over her final five holes to complete a remarkable 60.

Ryu came within inches of an even more historic finish.

Reaching the par-5 18th in two, she faced a 40-foot eagle putt that would have delivered just the second 59 in LPGA history.

Instead, she rolled her effort to tap-in range for birdie, sealing her place in the record books with a round of 60 for the lowest score ever recorded in a major.

Ryu's sensational round lifted her to 19-under-par, giving her a three-shot advantage over Japan's Aki Iwai, who also impressed with a 65.

Canada's Brooke Henderson surged into a share of third after a brilliant 64 alongside Japan's Mao Saigo (67) on 12-under par, while South Africa's Casandra Alexander climbed to 11-under par after firing an exceptional 63.

Ryu is now on course to claim a second consecutive major title after lifting the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine last month.

Her remarkable form is even more impressive given she only recently returned from a six-week absence following a medical procedure.

Overnight leader Lottie Woad endured a frustrating third round, carding a one-over 72 to slip back to 10-under par and likely out of the final-day lead battle.
