Scottie Scheffler's fans have all said the same thing after a video emerged of the World No. 1 putting in some time on the greens ahead of the Houston Open.

Golf fans are naturally superstitious, and many sign up for the idea that when things go well, you shouldn't make any big changes.

Clearly, Scheffler doesn't sign up to that particular school of thought and, as a result, has made a very noticeable change to his setup ahead of this week's Houston Open.

Having won back-to-back tournaments, Scheffler is in red-hot form, and a number of fans have speculated that his new beard is the difference maker.

More analytical fans might point out that his new putter has made the difference; however, we won't let that narrative get in the way of this particular story.

The grizzly-looking version of Scheffler has been on a tear in recent weeks, winning both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship, netting himself a cool $8.5 million in the process.

Despite the dizzying run of form, Scheffler has shaved his beard ahead of this week's Houston Open.

Much like the biblical tale of Samson and his hair, Scheffler's fans will be hoping the loss of facial hair won't result in Scheffler losing his golfing powers overnight, as he has a piece of history to chase this week.

If Scheffler wins the Houston Open, he will become the first player since Rory McIlroy in 2014 to win three straight stroke-play events on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy made it three in a row when clinching the 2014 US PGA.

Scheffler would also become the first player since Dustin Johnson to win three PGA Tour events in a row, something Johnson achieved when landing the 2017 WGC Match Play.

Discussing the decision to shave off his beard, Scheffler said:

'Well, yeah, it was nice because I didn't have to think about it, but then my beard got so long that it became work. Last week, I got a haircut, and I was thinking about trying to trim it, and I didn't really know how, so I just shaved it."

The last time Scheffler teed it up at the Houston Open was in 2022 and he finished T9.

Scheffler also finished second in 2021.

He owns a rather impressive 68.75 stroke average over his last 12 rounds at this week's venue, Memorial Park.

Scheffler is a warm 11/4 favourite with the bookies this week.

As soon as the video went live on the PGA Tour's Instagram account, fans immediately began to question Scheffler's decision.

Despite the wave of scepticism, one fan came up with a more nuanced suggestion as to the sudden change.

If Augusta is indeed the aim, then Scheffler has given himself plenty of time to grow the beard back to fighting length as he attempts to reclaim the Masters green jacket from LIV Golf's new superstar, Jon Rahm

Much has been made of Rahm's blockbuster $600 million move to the Saudi-backed league at the end of 2023, but the Spaniard has yet to win a LIV Golf title so far this season.

If Rahm can go back-to-back at Augusta National next month, however, he will most certainly quieten some of his doubters.
