Report: Controversial PGA Tour pro left stunned after caddie storms off mid-round
Alejandro Tosti's caddie decided to walk off the course after nine holes during the inaugural Biltmore Championship.
PGA Tour pro Alejandro Tosti was left without a caddie midway through his opening round at the Biltmore Championship, according to a report.
Per Golfweek, the incident happened whilst Tosti was playing his 9th hole of the day at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove.
His looper Cliff Ellis dropped the bag, removed his caddie bib and departed.
Tosti, 30, was playing alongside Luke Clanton and Spencer Oxendine after teeing off at 8:59am.
There was already visible tension between the pair during the practice rounds, according to the report, although the Argentine was surprised when his caddie left during the competition.
Tosti apparently believed Ellis had gone to use a bathroom near the 18th green and continued towards the first tee.
It was only then that he discovered his caddie had left the course.
Tosti reportedly later sent a tongue-in-cheek text message to reporter Adam Schupak stating that his looper "couldn't keep up" with the fact he had made nine pars in row.
Tosti eventually completed his round himself and carded a 1-over 72 after making par on each of his first 11 holes.
The episode adds another chapter to Tosti's reputation as one of professional golf's more combustible characters.
He has previously acknowledged that controlling his emotions and himself on the course has been a long-standing challenge.
Tosti has also had previous disagreements with other caddies and was suspended during the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour playoffs following incidents involving players and rules officials.
His caddie arrangements have also attracted attention this season, too.
At the Valspar Championship in March, he had his caddie wear a bib carrying the message "Need a wife".
Tosti currently sits 186th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings and will need to find a replacement caddie before returning to action.
American duo Max Greyserman and Eric Cole shared the lead after 18 holes at the Biltmore Championship.
The inaugural event marks the beginning of the FedEx Cup Fall series, where players typically jockey for position in the standings to improve their status for next season.
Justin Thomas was the highest-ranked player in the field, but withdrew ahead of the tournament citing no reason.
