Rory McIlroy responds to Brooks Koepka PGA Tour return and Patrick Reed's latest comments
Rory McIlroy has his say on Brooks Koepka's PGA Tour return and Patrick Reed's controversial LIV Golf comments.
Rory McIlroy has weighed in on two of the biggest talking points in men’s professional golf — Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour and Patrick Reed’s recent comments on the sport’s ongoing divide.
Speaking during his latest TGL appearance on Monday night, where Boston Common Golf cruised to a 9-1 win over The Bay GC, McIlroy shared his thoughts on Koepka’s decision to leave LIV Golf and rejoin the PGA Tour, as well as Reed’s claim that the PGA Tour remains the best in the world.
Koepka is returning to the PGA Tour this week at the Farmers Insurance Open, marking a dramatic shift just months after exiting LIV Golf at the end of 2025 with one year left on his reported $100 million contract.
The five-time major champion and former World No.1 was reinstated this month under the PGA Tour’s newly introduced Returning Membership policy.
Meanwhile, LIV Golf star Reed made headlines last week in Dubai by praising the PGA Tour — before revealing after his Dubai Desert Classic victory on the DP World Tour that he is not yet locked into a LIV Golf contract for the 2026 season.
Reed told Telegraph Sport at the beginning of the week he, too, would consider quitting LIV if he was offered the same terms as Koepka.
McIlroy believes Koepka’s decision speaks volumes about his competitive drive.
"Yeah, I think it says more about Brooks than anything else," McIlroy said of Koepka's return.
"He obviously is a very competitive person and wants to compete at the highest level.
"I think he made the decision that he thought competing at the highest level meant coming back to the PGA Tour."
McIlroy then suggested Reed’s recent remarks reflect a wider realisation among some LIV players.
"You've seen others say this recently. Patrick Reed said it in Dubai last week," continued the Northern Irishman.
"It seems like some of those guys are maybe starting to realise that they're not getting everything that they wanted out of going over there, and that's obviously a great thing for the PGA Tour."
