'Sorry PGA Tour...' golf fans react to Max Homa's comments ahead of John Deere Classic
PGA Tour star Max Homa has told reporters he's no longer using X / Twitter because of hate comments he received from disgruntled punters and fans.
Max Homa admits he stopped using X / Twitter earlier this season because of shocking comments he received during and after PGA Tour events.
Homa, 34, believes the rise of sports betting in the United States has led to a number of disgruntled PGA Tour punters taking things out on golfers as soon as they lose money.
The American used to regularly use X / Twitter and while he does still have an account on the social media platform, his last post was on 3 February.
Homa goes further by claiming the platform is "a safe haven for a**holes".
"Twitter or X is an awful, awful place. It took me a while to catch onto how impactful that can be and how much of a waste of energy," Homa told reporters.
He added: "I don't know if it's the gambling world or whatnot. I'm happy they can do it but it seems fun as hell in golf, but you get people, people say some bad, bad things. People tell you, you should die on the internet…
"Yeah, it's a safe haven for a**holes, for lack of a better term. Sorry PGA Tour."
Despite stepping away from social media and caring what people have to say about him, Homa remains winless on the PGA Tour in two and half years.
Homa has not had a single top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this season.
He's only once finished inside the top 20, coming with a T12 at The Masters in April.
The six-time winner has missed the cut in seven of his last 13 events.
Once fifth in the world, Homa currently looks on from the 99th rung of the ladder.
Homa also looks unlikely of playing any part in the US Ryder Cup team in New York this September.
A lot can change fast in this game, but Homa isn't particularly confident it will be this week at the John Deere Classic.
"Yeah, my game isn't particularly sharp," said an honest Homa.
"Obviously haven't played well this year or great lately either.
"You know, pieces of my game feel awesome but just in general, I haven't played sharp enough, especially a week like last week where beating up the par-5s and there is just a lot of birdies to be had.
"Hit a lot of greens; just didn't get a lot close. Ball hasn't really been going in from 20 or so feet, so it's been kind of a grind. You never know.
"Everybody out here is so good, you can get hot any four days. Hopefully this one is those four days."
