Keegan Bradley gives predictable response to inevitable Ryder Cup question after PGA Tour's season finale
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley says he still has absolutely no idea if he will name himself among his six wildcards for the forthcoming contest at Bethpage Black.
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley says he still has 'no clue' whether he will name himself among his six wildcards.
Bradley stated when he was named as the surprise choice to succeed Zach Johnson last July he would never pick himself.
The 39-year-old has had a strong season on the PGA Tour, though, and picked up his eighth title at the Travelers Championship.
Bradley also advanced through the PGA Tour's playoffs and finished inside the top-10 at the $40m season finale at East Lake.
He is unquestionably one of the top 12 U.S. golfers on the planet right now, but knows the decision could define his career if it backfires.
He told reporters that he was left alone by his vice-captains this week but they'll make a decision together shortly.
Bradley said at the beginning of the week it was 'the decision of his life' and it certainly hasn't got any easier.
"This is a whole 'nother animal," he said. "I have no clue. This is going to be really difficult.
"When I get done here, we're going to talk to my vice captains. We sort of put everything on hold the last couple days.
"I think they were trying to leave me alone. But we'll get in touch with them and get our final decisions together.
"Saw a lot of Americans play great today, which makes me happy."
The U.S. skipper was alluding to the fact that Russell Henley, Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Young, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns and Ben Griffin all fared well at the Tour Championship.
Bradley said he is aware that each of his vice captains will have their own opinion over what he should do.
One of them, Brandt Snedeker, was previously against Bradley taking on the playing role but has now changed his mind.
"I'm sure they've been talking behind my back as I'm out there," he said. "I know they have a separate chat without me.
"I'm sure they have some of their opinions that they want to tell me what they think.
"Again, we didn't talk at all last night. We talked but not about this. I think they were trying to leave me alone, like I said.
"Hopefully I'll get done here, pack up, and we'll start chatting."
Bradley said whatever decision is made he'll know that he could have 'just as easily' gone the other way.
"The only thing I care about is on Sunday of the Ryder Cup, that we win the Ryder Cup," he added. "Then I'll know I made the right decision.
"Until then, I won't know. It's going to be pretty wild. Whatever decision we make, we're going to have to live with it.
"I love the guys on our team. They're all playing great. It's just really something else. It's awesome."
Bradley also confirmed they have already decided the order of play for the 2025 Ryder Cup, but he will let the PGA of America announce that.
Six of Team USA are already known, with Bryson DeChambeau, Scheffler, Henley, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele and Harris English among those automatically securing their places.
Bradley will name his six captain's picks to complete the 12-man line-up on 27 August.
