Luke Donald’s side dominated the morning foursomes session and won the first three matches of the week, with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele putting the only red on the board as they held off a valiant fightback from Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

The US players, backed by President Donald Trump on the first tee, made a bright start to the afternoon fourballs, but Europe turned the tide and threatened to take another 3-1 win in the session.

Jon Rahm was magnificent as he and Sepp Straka beat an out-of-sorts Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose came from behind to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were 2 up after 11 holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, but Cantlay inspired an American fightback to earn a half-point in the final encounter of the first day.

Friday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Fleetwood won the first point of the week, and they were 6-under for the day in their crushing 5&4 win over an outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg also poured in six birdies as they took advantage of a lacklustre effort from Scheffler and Russell Henley, the European pair storming to a surprisingly easy 5&3 triumph in match 3.

And in the top match, Tyrrell Hatton and Rahm recovered from a sluggish start to overpower DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, running out 4&3 winners to leave US captain Keegan Bradley looking pale and pensive.

The raucous New Oak fans were in full voice after DeChambeau’s monster drive found the fairway at the opening hole and set up a winning birdie, but the battling European pair turned the match shortly before the turn.

Their wayward golf over the first few holes was quickly forgotten as they won the 7th with a par before Rahm’s 12-footer for birdie at the next gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The LIV Golf pairing reeled off three straight birdies from the 12th, two of them for wins, and another at 15 wrapped up a convincing 4&3 victory in the top match.

Fitzpatrick played arguably the best golf of the morning, continuing the fine form he has had to show over the last three months to earn his fourth Ryder Cup appearance.

The former US Open champion had the perfect foil in Aberg, although they were assisted by some scrappy golf from Scheffler and Henley, who made only two birdies in the 15 holes played.

The Europeans won four of the first six holes and added another at the 9th to find themselves 4 up at the turn, and that lead increased when they made their sixth birdie of the session at the 12th.

The home pair pulled one back with a rare birdie at the long 13th, but a par at 15 was enough to complete a surprise big win just moments after McIlroy and Fleetwood had got the first blue on the board on the 14th.

Europe’s top pair were also in sparkling form, making five birdies over the first 8 holes to render Morikawa and English a little shell-shocked.

The American pair did stop the rot with a winning birdie at the 9th, but “Fleetwood Mac” restored their 5up lead with their sixth birdie at the 12th, and two solid pars were enough for victory.

Hovland and MacIntyre gave themselves a great chance to complete a day 1 foursomes sweep for the second Ryder Cup in a row, fighting back from 3 down to win three holes in a row from the 12th.

But Cantlay and Schauffele won the last two holes to lift the spirits of the locals heading into the afternoon session.

Friday Fourballs: USA 1.5-2.5 Europe

The US again won the first hole of the session, but Rahm's performance in the top match was world-class as he and Straka powered ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, who missed a hatful of putts throughout.

After Straka chipped in for birdie at the 2nd, Rahm took over and rattled off four birdies to give the visitors a 3up lead, although it was the Austrian who came good at the end, with birdies at 14 and 16 wrapping up another European victory.

That came moments after Cameron Young and Thomas outclassed Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, who had a baptism of fire as he and the Swede stumbled to a 6&5 defeat in match 3.

Fleetwood and Rose had to grind hard to keep up with Griffin and DeChambeau, who were 1 up after 10 holes before a Fleetwood birdie turned the match on it's head.

The FedExCup champion then birdied 14 and 16 for wins and, although DeChambeau pulled one back at 17, Rose stepped up to hole from 12 feet at the last to secure success for the English duo.

Another 3-1 session win looked on the cards with McIlroy and Lowry 2 up with 7 holes to play, but Cantlay inspired a brilliant fightback with some high-quality iron-play backed up with assured putting.

McIlroy and Lowry were far from consistent, but they pulled out some big shots when needed, although McIlroy's 12-foot putt for a point on the final green missed on the high side to ensure the only tied match of the first day.

Day 1: Final Score

USA 2.5 - Europe 5.5

It's been a great day for Europe overall. It could have been better, but Luke Donald would surely have taken a 3-point lead at the start of day one at Bethpage.

All to play for in New York, expect a big response from the home side tomorrow.

Result: Match 4 finishes tied

Sam Burns & Patrick Cantlay tied with Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry

Lowry's putt is bang on line but pulls up inches short, leaving the door open for Burns.

The American misjudges the break and misses low, leaving the door open for McIlroy.

But the Masters champion allows for too much break and misses left.

Match all square, probably a fair result.

Cantlay shanks one!!

All eyes on the last match now, and the tension shows as Cantlay shanks his second with a wedge from the middle of the fairway.

He's in the crap on the right, Lowry is long and left, about 20 feet away, while Burns and McIlroy both have about 12 feet for birdie.

Cometh the hour, cometh the McIlroy!

Burns peppers the pin at 17 and has just 7 feet for birdie, while Lowry and Cantlay bail out right and McIlroy hits his to 12 feet.

Cantlay and Lowry make par, but McIlroy steps up to bury his birdie putt.

And fair play to Burns, who halves the hole with a confident stroke.

Result: Europe win match 2

Tommy Fleetwood & Justin Rose beat Bryson DeChambeau & Ben Griffin 1up

Awesome stuff from the English superstars at the 18th.

Fleetwood clips a lovely wedge to 6 feet, Griffin matches him, and Rose tugs his slightly.

With Bryson out of the hole, Rose takes the opportunity to wrap it up himself.

22:46
McIlroy and Cantlay trade birdies

What pressure at 16.

Aside from the lip-out at 14, Cantlay has been superb this afternoon and gives the Europeans a big scare when he holes from 17 feet for birdie.

But McIlroy wastes no time in following him in, and match 4 stays all square with 2 to play.

Both matches in the balance

Griffin, Fleetwood and Rose split the fairway at 18, with Bryson further up but in the cabbage on the right.

Back at 16, McIlroy and Lowry both have very makeable 10-foot putts for birdie. Advantage Europe in the bottom match.

22:36
Bryson birdie extends match 2

Huge cheers reverberate around Bethpage as Bryson cracks a 170-yard wedge to 5 feet at the 17th.

Rose and Fleetwood can't make birdie, and Bryson gets his putt to drop to take us to the 18th.

22:29
So close for McIlroy at 15

Burns and Lowry are not at the races right now, and it's down to McIlroy and Cantlay to battle it out.

McIlroy's tricky left-to-right slider down the hill at 15 is just a hair short of the required pace, and Cantlay's effort for the win was never high enough.

All square, 3 to play

Yes Tommy! Europe 2 up in match 2

What a turnaround in this match, and Fleetwood has just doubled the European lead.

Rose and Griffin both go close with their birdie tries, but Fleetwood's putt from just inside 20 feet is perfect.

He gets a kiss from Rose, and they go dormie when DeChambeau's putt from similar range dies across the face of the hole.

Results - Europe win match 1

Jon Rahm & Sepp Straka beat Scottie Scheffler & JJ Spaun 3&2

Straka has been much better in the back nine, and it's the Austrian who wraps up victory in the top match.

His distance control from 170 yards is bang on at the 16th, and after Scheffler keeps home hopes alive with a birdie, Straka rolls in from 6 feet to secure the win.

2 wins out of 2 for Rahm, 2 defeats for the world No 1 today.

Holy lip-out!

Cantlay has another look at birdie to take the lead for the US in the bottom match after sending his tee-shot to 3 feet.

But, like McIlroy on the previous hole, his ball stubbornly refuses to head south and that's a huge reprieve for the Irishmen.

22:07
English pair stay 1 up

Fleetwood and Rose both have chances to double their lead at the 15th after superb second shots find the green.

Fleetwood's 25-footer misses to the right, while Rose can't be too aggressive with his 12-footer down the hill.

McIlroy horseshoes out at 13 - match 4 is level

Unbelievable scenes on the 13th. Cantlay couldn't buy a putt this morning, but he can't miss this afternoon and bins a 12-footer for birdie.

McIlroy has 6 feet to keep Europe 1 up and it's in all the way, except when it performs a 360 around the hole and refuses to drop.

Ouch!

21:50
Take a bow, Jon Rahm!

Scottie Scheffler finally gets a putt to drop from just outside 20 feet at the 15th.

Rahm is a couple of feet closer, and he nails it to ensure Europe are 3 up with 3 to play in the top match.

21:47
Fleetwood and Rose take the lead

Bryson has his head in his hands as he shaves the hole from long range, with Griffin struggling to save par from the sand.

Fleetwood's tee shot was, by far, the best of the group, and he converts from eight feet to give Europe the lead in match 2 for the first time this afternoon.

Result: Team USA win Match 3

Cameron Young & Justin Thomas beat Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard 6&5.

It's been a baptism of fire for Hojgaard, but Young and Thomas were hugely impressive this afternoon.

And Young wrapped up a mauling in appropriate style, lashing an extraordinary 288-yard second to 12 feet at the 13th. Two putts from there was enough to end the match.

Rose and Griffin trade birdies

Match 2 looks like it's going all the way, and Rose continues to prove that age is no barrier!

Griffin stiffs his pitch from the rough at the par-5 after Rose and Fleetwood clip nice wedges in close after laying up.

Europe need a putt to drop, and Rose drops his from 12 feet to halve the hole.

Cantlay halves the deficit again

We've seen some of the best shots of the day at the 12th, and Cantlay adds to the highlight reel.

A smooth long-iron to five feet from close to 200 yards out gets the crowd going, and he pops in the chance to get the USA back to just 1 down.
