Luke Donald’s side dominated the morning foursomes session and won the first three matches of the week, with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele putting the only red on the board as they held off a valiant fightback from Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

The US players, backed by President Donald Trump on the first tee, made a bright start to the afternoon fourballs, but Europe turned the tide and threatened to take another 3-1 win in the session.

Jon Rahm was magnificent as he and Sepp Straka beat an out-of-sorts Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose came from behind to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were 2 up after 11 holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, but Cantlay inspired an American fightback to earn a half-point in the final encounter of the first day.

Friday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Fleetwood won the first point of the week, and they were 6-under for the day in their crushing 5&4 win over an outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg also poured in six birdies as they took advantage of a lacklustre effort from Scheffler and Russell Henley, the European pair storming to a surprisingly easy 5&3 triumph in match 3.

And in the top match, Tyrrell Hatton and Rahm recovered from a sluggish start to overpower DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, running out 4&3 winners to leave US captain Keegan Bradley looking pale and pensive.

The raucous New Oak fans were in full voice after DeChambeau’s monster drive found the fairway at the opening hole and set up a winning birdie, but the battling European pair turned the match shortly before the turn.

Their wayward golf over the first few holes was quickly forgotten as they won the 7th with a par before Rahm’s 12-footer for birdie at the next gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The LIV Golf pairing reeled off three straight birdies from the 12th, two of them for wins, and another at 15 wrapped up a convincing 4&3 victory in the top match.

Fitzpatrick played arguably the best golf of the morning, continuing the fine form he has had to show over the last three months to earn his fourth Ryder Cup appearance.

The former US Open champion had the perfect foil in Aberg, although they were assisted by some scrappy golf from Scheffler and Henley, who made only two birdies in the 15 holes played.

The Europeans won four of the first six holes and added another at the 9th to find themselves 4 up at the turn, and that lead increased when they made their sixth birdie of the session at the 12th.

The home pair pulled one back with a rare birdie at the long 13th, but a par at 15 was enough to complete a surprise big win just moments after McIlroy and Fleetwood had got the first blue on the board on the 14th.

Europe’s top pair were also in sparkling form, making five birdies over the first 8 holes to render Morikawa and English a little shell-shocked.

The American pair did stop the rot with a winning birdie at the 9th, but “Fleetwood Mac” restored their 5up lead with their sixth birdie at the 12th, and two solid pars were enough for victory.

Hovland and MacIntyre gave themselves a great chance to complete a day 1 foursomes sweep for the second Ryder Cup in a row, fighting back from 3 down to win three holes in a row from the 12th.

But Cantlay and Schauffele won the last two holes to lift the spirits of the locals heading into the afternoon session.

Friday Fourballs: USA 1.5-2.5 Europe

The US again won the first hole of the session, but Rahm's performance in the top match was world-class as he and Straka powered ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, who missed a hatful of putts throughout.

After Straka chipped in for birdie at the 2nd, Rahm took over and rattled off four birdies to give the visitors a 3up lead, although it was the Austrian who came good at the end, with birdies at 14 and 16 wrapping up another European victory.

That came moments after Cameron Young and Thomas outclassed Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, who had a baptism of fire as he and the Swede stumbled to a 6&5 defeat in match 3.

Fleetwood and Rose had to grind hard to keep up with Griffin and DeChambeau, who were 1 up after 10 holes before a Fleetwood birdie turned the match on it's head.

The FedExCup champion then birdied 14 and 16 for wins and, although DeChambeau pulled one back at 17, Rose stepped up to hole from 12 feet at the last to secure success for the English duo.

Another 3-1 session win looked on the cards with McIlroy and Lowry 2 up with 7 holes to play, but Cantlay inspired a brilliant fightback with some high-quality iron-play backed up with assured putting.

McIlroy and Lowry were far from consistent, but they pulled out some big shots when needed, although McIlroy's 12-foot putt for a point on the final green missed on the high side to ensure the only tied match of the first day.

Straka steps up, Spaun follows him in

Sepp Straka has been quiet today, mainly because Jon Rahm has been on fire!

But Rahm went long at the 14th, while Spaun knocked his tee shot inside 10 feet.

Straka needs to make something happen, and he obliges with a perfect putt from 25 feet which earns a half as Spaun, to his credit, follows the Austrian in for birdie.

21:24
Young and Thomas go 5 up

What a pairing this has been for Team USA.

Aberg and Hojgaard are well and truly deflated now, and Young and Thomas are buzzing.

This time it's Young who strikes, biffing a pure mid-iron to 5 feet at the 12th and rolling in the birdie putt for another win.

Highs and lows for Rahm at 13

Wow, what a hole for Rahm, and it's another shot of the week contender.

He lashed a 280-yard fairway-wood into orbit and got it to land and stop 12 feet away.

Scheffler just failed to chip in for eagle, and Rahm's putt for a 3 slides by on the low side.

21:12
Yes Shane!

The Irish pair restore their 2up lead at the 11th, thanks to a stunner from Lowry.

He's had an up and down day, but this was a big up as he gets a wedge to grip and spin back to 3 feet, and the birdie putt for the win is taken care of.

21:11
Chance goes begging for Fleetwood

Tommy hits it close at the 12th, although he is in the fringe once again.

The other three all two-putt from some distance, and Fleetwood's effort for the win is short and right.

Match 2 remains all square with 6 to play

Thomas and Young go 4 up

There's not a lot of wind left in the sails of Aberg and Hojgaard. They've played okay from tee to green, but they've not got any putts of note to drop.

That's the story for them on 11, where Hojgaard misses a good chance from 10 feet.

Thomas makes no mistake from 6 feet after another doozy of an wedge, the the USA are now 4 up in match 3

20:57
Cantlay claws a hole back in match 4

McIlroy and Lowry get into trouble at the 10th, although Rory comes agonisingly close to chipping in from the rough on the right.

It's a great par, but it's not enough as Cantlay pings his second to 12 feet and bins the putt for the win.

Europe now just 1 up

Fleetwood and Rose level match 2

Brilliant stuff from the English pair at the 10th, where DeChambeau and Griffin pay the price for wayward approaches.

Griffin spun his second back of the green, and Bryson's ended up against the collar of rough.

Rose knocked his to 6 feet, but he picked up his marker after Fleetwood drained a great putt from the fringe.

20:48
Match 4 - Europe 2 up at the turn

That's the front nine done for the day.

None of the fourball threaten the hole with second shots from various parts.

Burns has the best chance from 20 feet, but it's a half in par.

20:38
Rahm and Straka go 3 up

Rahm is the hottest player at Bethpage right now, while Scheffler's putter has gone icy cold.

The world No 1 is off target again from just inside 15 feet, and Rahm converts his cracking second to 10 feet to take a 3up lead in the top match.

Sporting from Bryson

Rose has a decent chance to haul match 2 level after a good second to 15 feet, but the putt veers left and trickles an awkward distance past.

But DeChambeau wanders over and concedes the putt for a half in pars.

Fair play.

Match 3 - USA go 3 up at the turn

Aberg and rookie Hojgaard need to find something special on the back nine.

The Swede pulls his birdie try from 10 feet, and Young converts his excellent second to 6 feet to give him and Thomas a commanding 3up lead

It's not happening for Scheffler

The world No 1 has really been out of sorts today, although he did play the beastly 10th well from tee to green.

He's smacked a lovely second to 10 feet, but the putt misses low and Straka two-putts for par to keep the Europeans 2 up.

20:21
Good save from Cantlay

Shane Lowry hits his best shot of the day, a smooth 220-yard tee shot to 12 feet at the 8th.

But after McIlroy comes close to chipping in, Lowry powers his putt through the break and Cantlay holes from 8 feet for the half.

Match 2 - USA turn 1 up

DeChambeau shaves the left edge from 30 feet on the 9th green, and Rose does likewise from 20 feet.

That's another halved hole, and the US duo have a slim lead heading to the back 9.

McIlroy does it again!

Just as I posted the clip of his big shout on the 6th, Rory has done it again on 7.

Burns and Cantlay both miss the green in two, although Cantlay plays a decent bunker escape to 3 feet.

Rory has 25 feet to win the hole, it it never looked like missing!

Europe turn 2 up in top match

Spaun misses another good chance to reduce the arrears after another fine approach to 10 feet at the 9th.

Scheffler gives Rahm a great read, but the Spaniard's 20-footer for the win just drifts left in the last couple of feet.

19:56
Fleetwood to the rescue

The 8th looks a cert to be halved in 3s, but Rose misses from 4 feet to pile the pressure on his partner, who is a couple of inches closer.

But Tommy is up to the task, and the English pair stay 1 down.
