Luke Donald’s side dominated the morning foursomes session and won the first three matches of the week, with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele putting the only red on the board as they held off a valiant fightback from Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

The US players, backed by President Donald Trump on the first tee, made a bright start to the afternoon fourballs, but Europe turned the tide and threatened to take another 3-1 win in the session.

Jon Rahm was magnificent as he and Sepp Straka beat an out-of-sorts Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose came from behind to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were 2 up after 11 holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, but Cantlay inspired an American fightback to earn a half-point in the final encounter of the first day.

Friday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Fleetwood won the first point of the week, and they were 6-under for the day in their crushing 5&4 win over an outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg also poured in six birdies as they took advantage of a lacklustre effort from Scheffler and Russell Henley, the European pair storming to a surprisingly easy 5&3 triumph in match 3.

And in the top match, Tyrrell Hatton and Rahm recovered from a sluggish start to overpower DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, running out 4&3 winners to leave US captain Keegan Bradley looking pale and pensive.

The raucous New Oak fans were in full voice after DeChambeau’s monster drive found the fairway at the opening hole and set up a winning birdie, but the battling European pair turned the match shortly before the turn.

Their wayward golf over the first few holes was quickly forgotten as they won the 7th with a par before Rahm’s 12-footer for birdie at the next gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The LIV Golf pairing reeled off three straight birdies from the 12th, two of them for wins, and another at 15 wrapped up a convincing 4&3 victory in the top match.

Fitzpatrick played arguably the best golf of the morning, continuing the fine form he has had to show over the last three months to earn his fourth Ryder Cup appearance.

The former US Open champion had the perfect foil in Aberg, although they were assisted by some scrappy golf from Scheffler and Henley, who made only two birdies in the 15 holes played.

The Europeans won four of the first six holes and added another at the 9th to find themselves 4 up at the turn, and that lead increased when they made their sixth birdie of the session at the 12th.

The home pair pulled one back with a rare birdie at the long 13th, but a par at 15 was enough to complete a surprise big win just moments after McIlroy and Fleetwood had got the first blue on the board on the 14th.

Europe’s top pair were also in sparkling form, making five birdies over the first 8 holes to render Morikawa and English a little shell-shocked.

The American pair did stop the rot with a winning birdie at the 9th, but “Fleetwood Mac” restored their 5up lead with their sixth birdie at the 12th, and two solid pars were enough for victory.

Hovland and MacIntyre gave themselves a great chance to complete a day 1 foursomes sweep for the second Ryder Cup in a row, fighting back from 3 down to win three holes in a row from the 12th.

But Cantlay and Schauffele won the last two holes to lift the spirits of the locals heading into the afternoon session.

Friday Fourballs: USA 1.5-2.5 Europe

The US again won the first hole of the session, but Rahm's performance in the top match was world-class as he and Straka powered ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, who missed a hatful of putts throughout.

After Straka chipped in for birdie at the 2nd, Rahm took over and rattled off four birdies to give the visitors a 3up lead, although it was the Austrian who came good at the end, with birdies at 14 and 16 wrapping up another European victory.

That came moments after Cameron Young and Thomas outclassed Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, who had a baptism of fire as he and the Swede stumbled to a 6&5 defeat in match 3.

Fleetwood and Rose had to grind hard to keep up with Griffin and DeChambeau, who were 1 up after 10 holes before a Fleetwood birdie turned the match on it's head.

The FedExCup champion then birdied 14 and 16 for wins and, although DeChambeau pulled one back at 17, Rose stepped up to hole from 12 feet at the last to secure success for the English duo.

Another 3-1 session win looked on the cards with McIlroy and Lowry 2 up with 7 holes to play, but Cantlay inspired a brilliant fightback with some high-quality iron-play backed up with assured putting.

McIlroy and Lowry were far from consistent, but they pulled out some big shots when needed, although McIlroy's 12-foot putt for a point on the final green missed on the high side to ensure the only tied match of the first day.

Good save from McIlroy

Fleetwood Mac stay 5 up in match 3.

Tommy's birdie putt is a little rapid and, after Morikawa misses a makeable chance from mid-range, McIlroy holds steady to take Europe dormie.

What a putt from Henley

Europe are sitting pretty in match 2 on the 14th, where Fitzpatrick knocks his tee shot to five feet after Scheffler pulls his long and left, the ball not catching the slope to take it towards the hole.

But Henley holes a huge, swinging putt from outside 30 feet, and Aberg does well to halve the hole in 2s.

Europe stay 4 up.

USA 3 up in bottom match

Clumsy from Hovland and MacIntyre at the 11th.

Hovland block his par putt from 4 feet, and Cantlay pounces to earn a third straight win.

Scheffler and Henley get one back

Some encouragement for Team USA in match 2 at the long 13th.

Both teams are bunkered off the tee and have to lay up, but Henley clips a lovely wedge to gimme range and Fitzpatrick can't convert Aberg's approach to 15 feet.

Europe 4 up with 5 to play.

15:14
Awesome from Hatton and Rahm

Hatton knocks a belter to 8 feet at the short 14th, only for Thomas to respond with a nice effort to 12 feet.

DeChambeau piles on the pressure as he sinks his putt, but Rahm does likewise to snatch a valuable half.

Europe stay 3 up.

5-Star stuff from Fleetwood Mac

It's another hole won for McIlroy and Fleetwood as Morikawa and English make a mess of the 12th.

Fleetwood lags to a couple of feet to set up a par for the visitors, and a poor bunker escape from Morikawa leads to a bogey for the disillusioned home pair.

Europe 5 up with 6 to play in match 3

Rahm and Hatton go 3 up in top match

Some untidy stuff in the opening match as Thomas hits a marshal while Hatton misses the green with his second shot.

DeChambeau's pitch isn't great and Thomas misses the birdie putt, while Rahm hits a decent chip to 8 feet and Hatton hits the target.

Europe 3up with 5 to play.

Europe 5 up in Match 2

Henley's poor approach to 12 leaves a spectator bruised and Scheffler with a tough pitch, and he undercooks it and leaves it short and in the fringe.

Henley lips out from 15 feet, Europe make another solid par and they go 5 up with 6 to play.

They're aiming at the crowd now!

Henley's second to the 12th airmails the green and cannons into the spectators!

And up at the long 13th, Thomas carves a 3-wood way right and hits a marshal.

Heart in mouth for Cantlay

Nice chip from Bobby Mac at the 9th earns a solid par for Europe in the bottom match, while Schauffele gets a little excited with his birdie attempt and rolls in 4 feet long.

Europe 2up in top match

Big mistake from DeChambeau at. the 12th, where he hits his approach long and left and short-sides his partner.

It looks like they'll get away with it after a stunning chip from Thomas is conceded, but Hatton nails a 20-footer for birdie to double the European lead.

14:46
Holes running out for English and Morikawa

The USA have a chance to pull another hole back in match 3, but Morikawa is off target from 15 feet and, after a long-range birdie try from Fleetwood, McIlroy saves par to tie the 10th

Europe stay 4 up in match 2

Scheffler and Henley are really struggling today, just one birdie in 11 holes.

But they grind out a good par at 11 as Scheffler saves from 8 feet, and Fitzpatrick rolls in a confident putt from "knee-knocker" range.

USA edge back ahead in bottom match

The "no red on the board" lasted just the one hole in match 4!

It's a good par for MacIntyre and Hovland, but Schauffele drains a cracker from 15 feet to take the USA 1 up after 8 holes

14:33
Tense stuff in top match

Europe stay 1up after 11, but it's almost a 3-putt from 12 feet for the home pair as DeChambeau's bold effort for birdie lips out and rolls 5 feet past.

Thomas stays cool to knock in the par putt, and Hatton does likewise from 4 feet.

No red on the board! Europe level bottom match

The leaderboard makes even better reading for Europe now as McIntyre and Hovland's cast-iron par at the 7th is enough for the win.

Cantlay has 7 feet to keep him and Schauffele ahead, but it's another tentative stroke and misses on the low side.

14:24
Another shot of the day contender?

Morikawa is blocked out by trees to the left of the 9th fairway, but he hits a hard, high draw with a wedge and sticks it to 3 feet. Fleetwood responds with a nice approach to 6 feet, and McIlroy will have a putt to take them to the turn in 6-under par.
