Luke Donald’s side dominated the morning foursomes session and won the first three matches of the week, with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele putting the only red on the board as they held off a valiant fightback from Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

The US players, backed by President Donald Trump on the first tee, made a bright start to the afternoon fourballs, but Europe turned the tide and threatened to take another 3-1 win in the session.

Jon Rahm was magnificent as he and Sepp Straka beat an out-of-sorts Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose came from behind to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were 2 up after 11 holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, but Cantlay inspired an American fightback to earn a half-point in the final encounter of the first day.

Friday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Fleetwood won the first point of the week, and they were 6-under for the day in their crushing 5&4 win over an outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg also poured in six birdies as they took advantage of a lacklustre effort from Scheffler and Russell Henley, the European pair storming to a surprisingly easy 5&3 triumph in match 3.

And in the top match, Tyrrell Hatton and Rahm recovered from a sluggish start to overpower DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, running out 4&3 winners to leave US captain Keegan Bradley looking pale and pensive.

The raucous New Oak fans were in full voice after DeChambeau’s monster drive found the fairway at the opening hole and set up a winning birdie, but the battling European pair turned the match shortly before the turn.

Their wayward golf over the first few holes was quickly forgotten as they won the 7th with a par before Rahm’s 12-footer for birdie at the next gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The LIV Golf pairing reeled off three straight birdies from the 12th, two of them for wins, and another at 15 wrapped up a convincing 4&3 victory in the top match.

Fitzpatrick played arguably the best golf of the morning, continuing the fine form he has had to show over the last three months to earn his fourth Ryder Cup appearance.

The former US Open champion had the perfect foil in Aberg, although they were assisted by some scrappy golf from Scheffler and Henley, who made only two birdies in the 15 holes played.

The Europeans won four of the first six holes and added another at the 9th to find themselves 4 up at the turn, and that lead increased when they made their sixth birdie of the session at the 12th.

The home pair pulled one back with a rare birdie at the long 13th, but a par at 15 was enough to complete a surprise big win just moments after McIlroy and Fleetwood had got the first blue on the board on the 14th.

Europe’s top pair were also in sparkling form, making five birdies over the first 8 holes to render Morikawa and English a little shell-shocked.

The American pair did stop the rot with a winning birdie at the 9th, but “Fleetwood Mac” restored their 5up lead with their sixth birdie at the 12th, and two solid pars were enough for victory.

Hovland and MacIntyre gave themselves a great chance to complete a day 1 foursomes sweep for the second Ryder Cup in a row, fighting back from 3 down to win three holes in a row from the 12th.

But Cantlay and Schauffele won the last two holes to lift the spirits of the locals heading into the afternoon session.

Friday Fourballs: USA 1.5-2.5 Europe

The US again won the first hole of the session, but Rahm's performance in the top match was world-class as he and Straka powered ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, who missed a hatful of putts throughout.

After Straka chipped in for birdie at the 2nd, Rahm took over and rattled off four birdies to give the visitors a 3up lead, although it was the Austrian who came good at the end, with birdies at 14 and 16 wrapping up another European victory.

That came moments after Cameron Young and Thomas outclassed Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, who had a baptism of fire as he and the Swede stumbled to a 6&5 defeat in match 3.

Fleetwood and Rose had to grind hard to keep up with Griffin and DeChambeau, who were 1 up after 10 holes before a Fleetwood birdie turned the match on it's head.

The FedExCup champion then birdied 14 and 16 for wins and, although DeChambeau pulled one back at 17, Rose stepped up to hole from 12 feet at the last to secure success for the English duo.

Another 3-1 session win looked on the cards with McIlroy and Lowry 2 up with 7 holes to play, but Cantlay inspired a brilliant fightback with some high-quality iron-play backed up with assured putting.

McIlroy and Lowry were far from consistent, but they pulled out some big shots when needed, although McIlroy's 12-foot putt for a point on the final green missed on the high side to ensure the only tied match of the first day.

Rahm takes Europe ahead

After Straka chipped in to square the match on the 2nd, Rahm drills a great tee shot to 15 feet at the tricky 3rd and judges the putt to perfection. Scheffler can't match him, and Europe go 1up.

18:13
What a start for Hojgaard

Lovely moment for the lone rookie on the European team.

Rasmus Hojgaard finds the short grass with a 330-yard drive, clips his second to 7 feet and rolls in the putt for birdie.

But, it's not enough to win the hole as Thomas pops one in from similar range.

Straka chips in to win hole 2

Sepp Straka looked a little nervous on the 1st hole, but he's got his chest puffed out on the 2nd.

Scheffler and Spaun both pulls their drives left, Rahm finds the semi-rough and Straka splits the fairway.

The Austrian punched in a nice second which catches the rear-left fringe and, and he chips in for the only birdie of the group.

Fleetwood & DeChambeau trade birdies

The noise ramps up on the first tee with the arrival of DeChambeau, who is warmly greeted by his President. And Bryson's drive was a carbon copy of his opening blow this morning, landing on the fairway around 30 yards short of the green.

But Fleetwood and Rose clip their second shots to inside 10 feet, while Bryson goes 6 feet long.

Fleetwood rattles in his putt for a 3, and DeChambeau follows him in.

USA strike early in fourballs

In a repeat of the morning session, the USA win the first hole of the afternoon fourballs.

Straka and Rahm can't find the cup for birdie, and US Open champion JJ Spaun taps in for a nice 3 that will settle his nerves.

Always nice to start your Ryder Cup career with a winning birdie!

William Hill have made Luke Donald's side favourites to retain the Ryder Cup.

Off and running in the fourballs

With President Trump watching on, the opening fourballs match is away.

Four good biffs, but none of them find the fairway. But Spaun pitches close from the rough, with Rahm 15 feet long and Straka coming up just short of the green.

Team USA win match 4

And that is that for the foursomes.

It was a brave effort from Hovland and MacIntyre, but the birdie they needed to square the bottom match on the last was a tough ask after Hovland carved his drive into the thick stuff on the right.

Bobby Mac could not reach the green from an awful lie and, after Schauffele clipped his approach in close, the match was conceded to get some red on the board.

16:45
President Trump inbound?

Keegan Bradley believes the appearance of President Donald Trump will inspire a USA comeback in the afternoon fourballs.

"It's not exactly what we wanted, but we know the Ryder Cup is going to be ebbs and flows, and I've got a lot of faith in our boys," said the US captain.

"We just had the President fly over in Air Force One, so I've got a feeling things are going to turn here."

USA win the 17th to go one up

There's red back on the board in the final foursomes match.

The European ball is plugged in the sand and Hovland can only gouge it out to 8 feet. Cantlay lags to a couple of inches, and MacIntyre can't find the cup with his par putt.

USA 1 up with one to play

16:36
Advantage USA on 17

There's a lot of indecision on the tee at the short 17th from MacIntyre, who gets some grief from the fans as he backs off and asks his caddie for a second opinion.

It's a clean strike, but he doesn't get the draw he wanted and he finds the left bunker.

Schauffele nails his 8-iron, and it's a great shot to 20 feet.

16:31
Birdie chances missed on 16

Proper golf here, and it's another good iron to 12 feet from MacIntyre, while Schauffele gets his a foot or two closer.

Hovland has holed some great putts today, but his birdie try slides by on the low side to open the door for Cantlay.

But the American's effort doesn't even scare the hole, and we stay all square heading to 17.

Unbelievable! Match 4 is tied.

Wow, you could almost hear a pin drop at a stunned Bethpage right now.

An awful drive from Schauffele cannons into the stands, and both pairs can't find the green in regulation.

MacIntyre and Cantlay both hit decent pitches to around 6 feet and, after Cantlay misreads his par putt, Hovland nails his centre cup.

All square, 3 holes to play, and the sweep is ON!

Fitzpatrick and Aberg celebrate

Matt Fitzpatrick has been in great form since The Open, and he enjoyed being paired up with the talented young Swede as they crushed world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley 4&3.

“I have played well over the last few months and Ludvig has not stopped playing well since he turned pro! It was a nice mix of playing well tee-to-green and some good putting," said the Englishman.

And Aberg added: “We came out of the gates early and played good golf. We hit a lot of nice shots and we made it hard for them. I had a great partner.”

Match 4 - 14th halved in par

Hovland's tee shot to the short 14th catches the fringe, while Cantlay's is pin-high but spins back to 25 feet away.

Schauffele lags for a gimme par, and Bobby Mac gets a little aggressive with his putt for the win, but Hovland holes from 4 feet to keep Europe just 1 down.

15:52
Hovland and MacIntyre back to 1 down

Keegan Bradley is looking a little pale and pensive right now!

The momentum in the bottom foursomes match is all with Europe now, and Hovland holes from 6 feet for birdie for their second win on the bounce.

USA just 1 up now with 5 to play.

15:47
Europe win match 2

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg beat Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley 5&3.

What a session for Europe, and Fitzpatrick has played arguably the best golf of the morning.

Both teams are in trouble off the tee at the 15th and Scheffler and Fitz are unable to find the dance floor.

Scheffler's 25-footer for par misses the target, and Fitzpatrick gets his to drop to give the Europeans a cracking win over the world No 1.

Europe pull a hole back in match 4

The final foursomes of this session is far from over.

MacIntyre smacks a superb 230-yard second from the rough to inside 10 feet and Schauffele also does well to find the green from the longer grass.

But Cantlay's putt is just short, and Hovland rolls his in to reduce the arrears.

Rory McIlroy & Tommy Fleetwood beat Collin Morikawa and Harris English 5&4.

Exceptional performance from Fleetwood Mac in match 3.

They were 6-under par for the day after 14, and that's where it ends as the USA pair can't make the birdie they need to extend the contest.

Europe win top match

Jon Rahm & Tyrrell Hatton beat Bryson DeChambeau & Justin Thomas 4&3

The opening foursomes is all over on the 15th. DeChambeau carved his drive into the grandstand on the right, although Thomas does well to get his second onto the green, albeit over 60 feet away.

Hatton, meanwhile, hits another great iron to 12 feet.

Bryson rolls a tricky putt down the hill, Rahm's tentative birdie putt is short, and Thomas misses from 6 feet and it's blue on the board in match 1.
