Europe stand on the verge of Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black following another outstanding performance on day 2, opening up a commanding seven-point lead over a deflated Team USA.

Luke Donald's superstars won both of Saturday's sessions 3-1, with Rory McIlroy extending his unbeaten run in the contest despite some fearful abuse from the raucous crowd throughout a one-sided Saturday in New York.

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played some inspired golf in the afternoon fourballs as they took down Bryson DeChambeau and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who became first player since 1979 to lose four matches in the first four sessions at the Ryder Cup.

The last match of the day also went Europe's way, with Tyrrell Hatton finding form down the stretch having been brought in as a late replacement for Viktor Hovland, who is a concern for Sunday's singles as he struggles with a neck injury.

When Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick edged out Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns at the last, it ensured that Europe will need just three points from Sunday's 12 singles to clinch the first away victory in the showpiece since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Saturday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

DeChambeau managed to get his first win of the week alongside Cameron Young in the top match, but that was the lone highlight for Team USA as Europe claimed another 3-1 win in the session.

McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood held off a late fightback from Harris English and Collin Morikawa to win 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Hatton won their fifth match together.

The unstoppable LIV Golf pairing also won 3&2 in a high-quality battle against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with Rahm pulling off a number of sensational shots along the way.

Scheffler and Russell Henley lost out to Bob MacIntyre and Hovland after a titanic battle in the final foursomes of this contest.

Saturday Fourballs: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Lowry defied the constant abuse from the crowd to hold off Justin Thomas and Cameron Young in a match marred by the unsavoury scenes from outside the ropes.

A number of unruly spectators were removed from the property, while McIlroy refused to putt on the 6th green until order had been restored in the galleries, forcing officials to bring in a battalion of state troopers to stifle the troublemakers.

But Lowry was fired up and took the Irishmen 2 ahead when he eagled the 4th and birdied the 5th, while McIlroy stepped up on the back nine in match of incredible tension.

Rose was also inspired in match 2, the quality of which can be explained by Scheffler and DeChambeau being a combined 9-under par for 16 holes and losing 3&2!

Rose was also involved in an altercation with DeChambeau's caddie, Greg Bodine, on the 15th green which escalated into a blazing row involving players, caddies and vice-captains en route to the 16th tee.

A clean sweep of the fourballs looked on the cards until JJ Spaun birdied 17 and 18 to earn him and Schauffele a 1up victory over Rahm and Sepp Straka, with Rahm losing his first match in fourballs or foursomes since 2018.

But the day finished on yet another high note for the visitors with Hatton making birdies at the final four holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, and after he and Fitzpatrick peppered the pin at the 18th, they snatched Europe's sixth win of another memorable day.

That's a wrap from day 2

And this is how we've summed up an amazing Saturday ...

00:07
Donald: Job not done yet

European captain Luke Donald is not getting ahead of himself ahead of the final day.

"I didn't really imagine this. Obviously their job is not done yet but to have this stand in New York with most of the cheers coming from our side is incredible.

"Just the resiliency and the confidence these guys have in themselves, in their partners, is really, truly incredible."

Result: Fitzpatrick & Hatton beat Burns & Cantlay 1up

What a finish to another dream day for Europe.

The amazing shots from Hatton and Fitzpatrick at 18 are conceded, Cantlay can't chip in, and Burns is unsuccessful from 30-odd feet.

Hatton was particularly brilliant down the stretch, not bad for a last-minute replacement!

Overall score: USA 4.5-11.5 Europe

Darts from Hatton and Fitzpatrick

Stunning finish from the English pair at 18.

Fitzpatrick is in the bunker on the right, but he's drilled his second to 3 feet.

And Hatton matches him, spinning his ball back into Fitzpatrick's.

The US pair are nowhere near the pin, and this looks great for Europe.

23:19
Result: Spaun & Schauffele beat Rahm & Straka 1up

Look out, there's some red on the board!

Rahm and Straka were 1up with 2 holes to play, but Spaun staged a superb finish to win the last two holes.

After knocking it stiff at 17, he spins a neat approach to 3 feet at the last.

Rahm scrambles a par, but Spaun holds his nerve to clinch the first US point of the session.

Hatton cancels out Cantlay birdie!

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (17)

It's the same as 16, but in a different order!

Burns is in close at 17, but he doesn't need the wand as Cantlay bags another birdie from 20 feet.

But Hatton coaxes his birdie effort down the hill and straight in the middle. All square heading to the last, and it's getting dark now.

Spaun stars at 17

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele A/S Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka (17)

Spaun whacks a belter into 17 to 4 feet, the US Open champion has been seriously impressive today.

Straka and Rahm both miss for birdie, and Spaun makes no mistake to level match 3.

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (16)

22:54
Diplomacy from McIlroy

After his win with Lowry, McIlroy gave all the credit to his partner and then gave a measured answer when asked if the crowd went too far today:

"Look, when you play an away Ryder Cup, it's really, really challenging. It's not for me to say. People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not.

"I'm just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through."

Spaun goes close to levelling match 3

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele v Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka 1UP (16)

Schauffele almost steals the 16th hole as he's a whisker away from holing a long-ranger.

Straka's in for par, and Spaun has an uphill putt to level the match, but it misses right and Europe keep their slim lead.

22:42
Result: McIlroy & Lowry beat Thomas and Young 2up

Take a bow Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, that's a magnificent win given the abuse they were copping on every hole.

Young chunks his second to 18. Thomas spins his back off the green. No birdies for the US pair, and it's all over.

Lowry was brilliant on the front nine, McIlroy stepped up down the stretch, and he remains unbeaten in the Ryder Cup since 2021.

The overall score is now USA 3.5-10.5 Europe.

22:38

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (15)

Cantlay hasn't made much happen this afternoon, but he finds a putt at the 15th from similar range to Straka.

But Hatton ensures there is still no red on the board as he makes one from 8 feet for the half.

Straka and Spaun trade birdies at 15

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele v Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka 1UP (15)

Spaun and Schauffele must be wondering what they have to do to win a hole.

Straka gets in first, but Spaun does well to keep the deficit at 1.

22:31
Result: Fleetwood & Rose beat Scheffler & DeChambeau 3&2

It's all over in match 2, and it's Rose who applies the finishing blow.

DeChambeau and Scheffler were a combined 9-under par through 16 holes, and they've lost 3&2.

Incredible stuff from the English Roses, and it means the world No 1 golfer has lost all 4 of his matches at Bethpage.

22:25
Yes Shane, you beauty!

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (17)

Nerves of steel from Lowry at 17 after Thomas almost makes a hole-in-one.

He's got 6 feet to keep the Irishmen ahead, and it's dead centre.

Burns levels bottom match

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay A/S Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick (14)

22:16
McIlroy thwarts Young at 16

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (16)

Whatever the US have thrown at Europe this afternoon, Luke Donald's guys have answered.

Young gets a good putt to drop at the 16th, but a resurgent McIlroy also makes 3 and Europe stay 1 up with 2 to play.

22:13
Rahm answers again at 14

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele v Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka 1UP (14)

Spaun makes another nice putt at the short 14th, but Rahm is about where McIlroy was a couple of holes ago and the putt has the same result. Halved in 2s, Europe stay 1 up.

DeChambeau having a pop at English Roses on 15

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose 3UP (15)

It's all got heated at the 15th in match 2. Rose asked DeChambeau's caddie to move out of the way while he was lining up a crucial putt for birdie - which he nails ... again!

DeChambeau now has 15 feet to extend the match, but he rolls in his first decent putt in an age!

And as they walk to the 16th tee, it's all kicking off between the players and caddies. Rose and Scheffler, however, wander along chatting away without a care.

21:57
Rahm maintains lead in match 3

JJ Spaun/Xander Schauffele v Jon Rahm/Sepp Straka 1UP (13)

Jon Rahm splashes out to 4 feet at the 13th and keeps his cool to match Spaun's birdie. Europe stay ahead in all four matches.

21:51
Magic from McIlroy and Lowry at 15

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (15)

What a recovery from McIlroy at 15, where he pulled his drive into a skip compound in between a couple of stands. He gets a free drop , but into a horrible lie, and he's gouged it to 4 feet!

Lowry is also in fairly close, but Thomas puts a spanner in the works as he holes from the fringe.

But Lowry again screams at the crowd after earning the half from 8 feet. Scenes!

Rose and Fleetwood dovetailing beautifully, they go 3 up!

Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau v Tommy Fleetwood/Justin Rose 3UP (14)

Fleetwood clips a great wedge into 14 and almost spins it back into the hole, and DeChambeau does likewise.

But Fleetwood puts his putter away after Rose rattles in yet another birdie putt, and Bryson pushes his par putt wide.

21:45
Hatton and Fitzpatrick stay in front

Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay v Tyrrell Hatton/Matt Fitzpatrick 1UP (12)

Not for the first time, the English pair both have putts to win the hole from 20-foot range at the 12th.

One stays high, the other slides by on the low side and the lead remains 1.

21:37
Welcome back Rory McIlroy

Justin Thomas/Cameron Young v Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry 1UP (14)

McIlroy ignores the shouts on his backswing and hits to 8 feet at the short 14th, with Thomas already very close.

He finds a long-overdue birdie putt and goes mental at the crowd, and then Thomas misses his putt for the half.
