Ryder Cup 2025 Singles: Europe stutter to victory after epic USA fightback

What a sensational final day of The 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where Europe have retained the Ryder Cup on a nerve-wracking Sunday as Team USA dominated the singles and came close to pulling off the most incredible comeback in history.

Europe held off a momentous fightback from Team USA to retain the Ryder Cup in an epic final-day battle at Bethpage Black.

Shane Lowry was the man to make sure the trophy would remain in Luke Donald's hands, the big Irishman dancing with delight after making a clutch birdie on the 18th to snatch a tie with Russell Henley.

And in match 10, Tyrrell Hatton's tied match with Collin Morikawa secured outright victory as Europe stumbled over the line, with the final score being 15-13.

Several of Donald's senior players ran out of steam on a tension-packed Sunday in New York, with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm running on empty after playing five gruelling sessions.

The projected record-breaking victory looked on in the early stages as Europe led in the top five matches, with Matt Fitzpatrick storming into a 5-hole lead over Bryson DeChambeau approaching the turn.

But Ludvig Aberg was the only player to notch a victory throughout the day as Justin Rose, Fleetwood and McIlroy were all pipped at the final hole, while DeChambeau pulled off a sensational comeback to tie his thrilling encounter with Fitzpatrick.

Rose came back from 3-down against Cameron Young, only for the American to birdie the last and Justin Thomas did the same to earn victory over Fleetwood.

McIlroy looked jaded from the start against world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who managed to avoid becoming the first American player to lose five out of five matches in a single Ryder Cup, clinching a 1up win over the world No 2.

Aberg's lone victory proved priceless, as did the half-point that was enforced before the start of play when Viktor Hovland was forced to pull out of his singles match against Harris English due to his neck injury that worsened overnight.

Lowry was 2 down with 4 to play in match 8 against Henley, but the former Open champion reduced the arrears at 15 and stepped up for his team at the last, rattling in a 6-foot putt for birdie to ensure the valuable 14th point.

Hatton made certain of the outright win, and Bob MacIntyre also won the 18th to tie his match with Sam Burns as the New York fans departed Bethpage in droves, not wishing to hang around and watch Europe celebrate their first win on American soil since the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Rose wins the 5th, Europe up in top 4 matches

Cameron Young v Justin Rose 1UP (5)

Bit of drama at the 5th as Rose gets a free drop with his ball embedded in the lip of a greenside bunker.

He gets up and down for par, and that's enough to win the hole as Young misses from 10 feet.

18:05
Tommy 2 up on Thomas

Justin Thomas v Tommy Fleetwood 2UP (4)

Two mighty blows at the 4th leaves Fleetwood with 25 feet for eagle, but two putts is enough as Thomas can't scramble a birdie.

18:03
McIlroy goes 1 up on Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler v Rory McIlroy 1UP (2)

Goodness me, it gets even better for the visitors.

Scheffler tugged his drive into the trees, his ball dropping into a dreadful lie in the fescue.

He knifed his second over the green although he almost holed the chip back.

Here's McIlroy, 15 feet for the win, and it's in.

Nervy moment for Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay A/S Ludvig Aberg (1)

Almost a gift for Aberg at the 1st as Cantlay's par putt circled a few times before dropping!

17:58
Bryson 3-putts from 10 feet at the 3rd

Bryson DeChambeau v Matt Fitzpatrick 2UP (3)

It's advantage DeChambeau at the 3rd, where Fitzpatrick finds the left bunker before Bryson bashes a beauty to 10 feet.

But Matt's escape is fantastic and it's conceded, and DeChambeau then gets a rush of blood and races his birdie putt way long.

And he misses the return! What a gift for the Englishman

Escape for Rose at the 4th

Cameron Young A/S Justin Rose (4)

Young burns the edge of the hole at the 4th and Rose dodges a bullet there. Match 1 all square.

Hats off to Matt

Bryson DeChambeau v Matt Fitzpatrick 1UP (2)

Fitzpatrick leaves himself a knee-knocker to avoid dropping a hole at the 2nd, but he rattles it in to stay ahead.

17:49
Scrambling at the 3rd

Justin Thomas v Tommy Fleetwood 1UP (3)

Four players out of four so far have missed the 3rd green to the left.

But Thomas and Fleetwood both get up and down for par and the Englishman stays 1 up.

17:45
And it begins! McIlroy heckling relentless

Scottie Scheffler A/S Rory McIlroy (1)

The abuse aimed at McIlroy yesterday crossed the line many times, and he's had to back away from his pitch into the 1st due to inane shouting as he addressed his ball.

But he composes himself and clips it to 10 feet, as does Scheffler.

McIlroy's birdie putt doesn't turn as much as he expected, Scheffler's effort down the hill turns too much.

Halved in par.

More blue on the board thanks to Fleetwood

Justin Thomas v Tommy Fleetwood 1UP (2)

Fleetwood has opened with two fine approaches, the second of which he converts for birdie to win the 2nd hole.

Fine start for McIlroy

Scottie Scheffler A/S Rory McIlroy

The world's top 2 players are off and running, and it's a predictable mix of boos and cheers to greet Rory.

But he smacks a perfect drive away and finds the short grass, as does the winless Scheffler.

17:38
Rose levels top match

Cameron Young A/S Justin Rose (3)

Two loose tee shots at the short 3rd find the left rough.

Both chip to 6 feet, Young misses, Rose hits!

Match 1 all square

17:36
Fitzpatrick 1 up on DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau v Matt Fitzpatrick 1UP (1)

Super second from the rough by Fitzpatrick and not the best of pitches from Bryson.

The American's putter was icy cold yesterday, and he's missed another putt from inside 10 feet here.

But Fitzpatrick makes no mistake and puts the first blue on the board.

17:33
"Zero complacency" for Europe

European captain Luke Donald is taking nothing for granted with his side so close to victory.

"Yeah, zero complacency. We know how strong these guys are. They are very dangerous in singles. We've got to go take care of our own matches and try and win the session.

"We thought the US would go with their strongest players out front, as they have. We throughout all of our strongest, too, and we have reserves in the back in case we need it."

17:30
Almost back-to-back birdies for Young

1UP Cameron Young v Justin Rose (2)

Solid par for Rose at the 2nd. Young's drive flirted with the trees on the left, but he got his approach to 20 feet and the putt just slides by

Huge noise for huge DeChambeau drive

Bryson DeChambeau A/S Matt Fitzpatrick

Looks like David vs Goliath as they stood together being announced!

Fitz pulls his drive into the left rough, but Bryson again goes straight at the green.

And he nearly makes it, too, just 10 yards from the front edge.

17:26
Fleetwood and Thomas go close

Justin Thomas A/S Tommy Fleetwood (1)

Thomas is an inch from emulating Young's birdie putt on the 1st green.

Tommy is closer and on the right level, but he can't get it to drop

17:17
Match 2 is away

Justin Thomas A/S Tommy Fleetwood

Young's birdie has lifted the spirits in the stands as match 2 tees off.

Fleetwood and Thomas are side by side in the first cut to the right of the fairway.

What a start for Young

1UP Cameron Young v Justin Rose (1)

First blood to the home side, although that's happened a lot this week!

Young's approach comes up quite short, but he rolls it in for birdie up the hill and Rose can't match that from the other side of the pin.

17:06
And we're off!

Cameron Young A/S Justin Rose

Match 1 is away, and the atmosphere remains electric despite the USA staring at a record defeat on home soil.

Rose smacks a nice drive and finds the left edge of the fairway, Young's doesn't quite make the carry to the short grass.

But, as we've seen all week, being in the rough is hardly a disadvantage.
