Genesis Scottish Open 2022 LIVE: Xander Schauffele claims thrilling win

Keep up to date with the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.

The Genesis Scottish Open is the third Rolex Series event of the season with a total prize purse of $8million.

American Xander Schauffele led by two shots over Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello going into the final round in East Lothian.

Jordan Spieth started the final round in contention, alongside American Ryan Palmer and England's Jordan Smith.

U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick was also four strokes behind the lead going into the final round.

The tournament is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour. The winner will receive $1.4million.

This is the last tournament ahead of the landmark, 150th Open at St Andrews.

LIV Golf players are in the field after Ian Poulter won a legal challenge to play after the DP World Tour fined and suspended the defectors.

Kurt Kitayama ties the lead, Fleetwood gets hot...

Kurt Kitayama drains a snaking, left-to-right putt for birdie at No. 14 to tie the lead at 7-under par.

We just spoke about Tommy Fleetwood, and he's found another birdie with two holes left to play.

The Englishman is only two behind Kitayama and Schauffele.

17:36
Fitzy on the move...

Matthew Fitzpatrick just loves tough conditions doesn't he?

He's had a frustrating time of it today.

Every time he has made a birdie he has followed that with a bogey.

He's just manage to pick up another birdie at the 10th hole and moves to 4-under par.

Good effort from the U.S. Open champion.

Speaking of Fitzy, did you catch this bizarre moment earlier in the week?

Will Zalatoris' golf ball found itself directly on top of his ball marker.

Strong moves by Tommy Fleetwood and Jamie Donaldson

Jamie Donaldson is quietly putting together a lovely round and is 4-under par for the day, currently sitting in a tie for sixth place.

He's got a few holes left to post a number.

England's Tommy Fleetwood is also sitting on the same score as Donaldson.

He has a couple of holes left to play, so he is by no means out of it if he can notch a few birdies.

Fleetwood's caddie had some strong words to say about the DP World Tour chief executive this week.

Read about that here.

This is how it unravelled for Schauffele...
17:22
The lead is reduced...

Well, well, well...

Xander Schauffele's lead has now reduced to just a single stroke after back-to-back bogeys.

This is really anyone's game now.

Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa are all in hot pursuit.

17:19

Trouble for Schauffele...

And just like that, Schauffele's lead is halved after a Kitayama birdie and the first dropped shot from the Olympic gold medalist.

Schauffele came unstuck at the par-3 sixth hole with an errant tee shot.

And he's in trouble again at the very next hole. He's given himself about 10-12 feet for par after a dodgy second shot left him in a pot bunker.

16:51
Imagination for Schauffele

Xander Schauffele tucks in for par at the fifth hole.

He used all of his imagination and the contours of the vast, sloping green to make it easy for himself, though.

The American sent his putt racing high past the hole and then used the slope perfectly.

He was already on the move watching his golf ball trickle back to the hole.

He looks in complete and utter control right now.

16:49
Spieth misses...

It took a while for Jordan Spieth to make his first birdie of the day but he has immediately given that shot back.

Pain.

16:46
Finally some joy for Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth picks up his first birdie of the day and moves into a four-way tie for second at 5-under par with a birdie at No. 5.

Also on the same score is Patrick Cantlay, Kurt Kitayama and Max Homa.

Spieth has got his work cut out to salvage his par at the par-3 sixth, though...

How are the LIV Golf players getting on?

LIV Golf player Justin Harding was in contention at the start of the week but has had a tough few days and finished the Scottish Open at 2-over par.

Here was his reaction to the "awkward" feeling of being a LIV Golf player teeing it up.

Ian Poulter missed the cut.

Adrian Otageui is 3-over par with three holes left to play. Branden Grace is currently just outside the top-10 at 3-under par.

Grace won the second LIV Golf event in Portland, Oregon, at Pumkin Ridge Golf Club.

16:31
Homa on the move...

Max Homa moves into a tie for second at 5-under par.

It's blisteringly hot here and the Los Angeles native just told Sky Sports that the temperature makes him feel "at home".

His birdie putt at the seventh was aggressive but caught the left edge.

16:26
Frustrating start for Spieth

Jordan Spieth is already muttering to himself under his breath.

He's had a couple of really good looks for birdie early on but has seen his efforts slide by.

Schauffele can't take advantage of the par-5 third and has to settle for par.

Cabrera-Bello can, though, and moves back to 4-under.

16:20
Don't discount Max Homa

American Max Homa is going along nicely today and is 2-under par thru six holes.

Of course, at 4-under par overall he'll need some help from Schauffele.

He's absolutely loving links golf at the minute and even after he made the cut here, the social media super star decided to play another 18 holes

Homa also apparently enjoyed an hilarious dinner with Justin Thomas in Scotland.

16:14
Leaderboard update...

Schauffele -9 (2)

Kitayama -5 (7)

Palmer -5 (3)

Cantlay -4 (9)

Homa -4 (5)

Tringale -4 (4)

R. Hojgaard -3 (7)

Kim -3 (6)

Bjork -3 (5)

Schauffele extends his lead to four shots...

If Schuaffele had any nerves, then his isn't showing them.

He's had a birdie-birdie start and now moves to 9-under par.

Meanwhile, it's been the exact opposite start for Cabrera-Bello, who has dropped two shots in his opening two holes.

16:06
Interesting start for Fitzpatrick

Matthew Fitzpatrick had a bizarre start to the day.

He hit his tee shot down the left into the first cut and then hit a shank. An absolute hosel rocket.

From there, his golf ball hit a Genesis advertising sign and then darted...onto the green.

He safely navigated two putts for an opening par, but he dropped a shot at his next hole to fall back to 3-under.

16:02
Pain for Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler started the day inside the top-10 and needed to keep it that way to get himself into The Open.

But it's a familiar, painful story for Fowler. He's played solid, if not unspectacular golf all week but he's dropped all the way back down to T-45 after a nightmare start, playing his first nine holes in 4-over par.

He's now well and truly out of the running for a spot in St Andrews.

15:58
Phil Mickelson gets his Open preparation underway...

Phil Mickelson is playing a practice round at the Old Course with fellow Green Jacket owner Danny Willett.

Mickelson can be seen here using a different putter.

Earlier in the week, Lefty confirmed that he wouldn't take part in a past champions' day held by the R&A ahead of the major.

Golf's governing body also disinvited Greg Norman

15:53
Nervous start for Cabrera-Bello, Schauffele starts fast

Rafa Cabrera-Bello has already dropped a shot at the par-4 first hole and falls four shots behind.

Leader Xander Schauffele tucks his approach in tight for an attempt at birdie.

The Olympic champion rolls it straight into the centre of the cup to give himself a three shot lead.

Quite a message for the American.

15:46
Steady start for Spieth, another birdie for Cantlay

Jordan Spieth navigates the first hole with a par after leaving his approach into the green well, well short.

Spieth was involved in an hilarious exchange with his caddie Michael Greller earlier in the week.

Read about that here.

Patrick Cantlay moves into a tie for second after he finds another birdie to move to 5-under par alongside Ryan Palmer and Rafa Cabrera-Bello.

15:43
Some golf news for you...

We are in East Lothian but all eyes are already on preparations for the 150th Open Championship.

Tiger Woods has arrived on the property and has played a practice round today at his favourite venue.

As I type this, we are now fully underway. Leaders Schauffele and Cabrera-Bello are safely in play.

Buckle up.

15:39
Cantlay makes the first move...

Afternoon all. Ben here with your final round updates at the Genesis Scottish Open. Xander Schauffele is about to tee off alongside Rafa Cabrera-Bello with a two-stroke lead.

Patrick Cantlay has made the first move today here at The Renaissance Club. He's 3-under par after his first six holes...
