Justin Thomas endured a moment to forget during the second day of the 2025 US Open

Thomas came into Friday with hopes of making the halfway cut at the third men's major of the year at Oakmont.

Unfortunately he got off to the worst possible start with a bogey at the 11th, his second of the day, then unravelled at the next.

Making matters worse was the fact Thomas, 32, had a 22-foot put for birdie at the 12th but trudged off the green with his scorecard in tatters.

JT lagged his birdie attempt to approximately three feet then couldn't believe his eyes as he endured not one but two violent lip-outs.

Out of absolutely nowhere, the two-time major champion made a double bogey seven and slumped to 9-over par.

It's looking like the projected cut will likely be around 6-over.

Take a look at the nightmare here:

Brutal.

"This is why you always make JT putt out in match play," one wrote.

"Well and truly Oakmont'd," another added.

It means Thomas has now missed seven cuts out of his last 11 major championship starts.

It's also his third consecutive missed cut in a US Open.

Thomas will be particularly disappointed with his performance given it is a Ryder Cup year.

The golfer relied on one of Zach Johnson's captain's picks to get into the U.S. team that was comfortably beaten in Italy in 2023.

Thomas does have some reason for optimism, though, as he recently ended his drought on the PGA Tour

Victory at the RBC Heritage saw in April saw the golfer step into the winner's circle for the first time in nearly three years.

Thomas wasn't the only big name going home early.

Former champion, Dustin Johnson, also continued his miserable run of results in the majors.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau and Masters winner Rory McIlroy also struggled on day one and were left with battles to make the cut.

As did tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler
