JJ Spaun will take a one-shot lead into the second round of the 2025 US Open

Spaun, who was beaten by Rory McIlroy in a playoff in March at The Players Championship, went round Oakmont in 4-under 66 on Thursday.

Remarkably, the 34-year-old American did not even make a bogey.

"I just think I'm trying to feel like I have nothing to lose," Spaun said.

"That was kind of my mantra at The Players when I was playing really well at that tournament and going into Sunday with the lead.

"It was like, I feel like I have nothing to lose. So I'm going to roll with that again this week, and hopefully it'll turn out more in my favour."

South Africa's Thriston Lawrence, who was in contention to win last July's Open Championship, sits in solo second on 3-under.

LIV Golf recruits Brooks Koepka (68) and Jon Rahm (69) are also inside the top-10.

Koepka revealed that his golf coach, Peter Cowen, tore into him at the start of the week. "It's not the first time he's done it," he said.

Rahm said: "Just a really good round, really good golf in general. Everything felt good.

"The thing I would say made it really good was how well I did off the tee.

"I would say hit pretty much every tee shot in the fairway or on the first cut and far down there at that.

"So that certainly made the day a lot easier."

Elsewhere, several big names struggled and are in danger of missing the 36-hole cut unless their fortunes improve.

Chief among them is the Masters champion, McIlroy, who started brilliantly but ultimately slumped to a 4-over 74

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who came into the US Open as the heavy favourite, was only one better than McIlroy.

"Slow day," Scheffler said. "I made some silly mistakes out there.

"But at the same time, I made some key putts and some good momentum saves in my round, but overall just need to be a little sharper."

Bryson DeChambeau, the defending champion, is among 13 players on 3-over.

"Pretty disappointed with how I played," he said.

"It's not too far off. Just got to get the putting a little bit more dialled, and I'll be right there because 3-over could have easily been 2-under today."

GolfMagic will be back with live text updates, reaction and analysis from day two of the US Open.
