Sam Burns will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2025 US Open

The American hit a sensational 5-under 65 to take the 36-hole lead yesterday and retained a slim advantage after carding a 1-under 69 on moving day at Oakmont.

"As a kid growing up, you dream about winning major championships and that's why we practice so hard and work so hard," Burns said.

"All these guys in this field I think would agree that to have the opportunity to win a major is special. I'm definitely really excited for tomorrow."

J.J. Spaun, who lost to Rory McIlroy in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass in March, is tied for second with former Masters champion Adam Scott.

Scott, 44, is playing in his 96th consecutive major championship this week and is chasing his first major triumph since winning the green jacket in a playoff at Augusta National in 2013.

The Aussie, who told reporters yesterday he was content playing 'old man par golf', went round Oakmont in 67 strokes on Saturday.

European Ryder Cup star Viktor Hovland is also in the hunt. The Norwegian got off to the worst possible start by hitting his opening drive into the trees but produced a gritty level par 70 to sit in fourth.

LIV Golf recruits Tyrrell Hatton (68) and Carlos Ortiz (67) will also believe they can win but might need to rely on mistakes from the leaders.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre may be too far adrift at 3-over.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who came into the tournament as the overwhelming favourite, is among a group of 10 players on 4-over.

Elsewhere, major champions Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm failed to get moving on day three.

Koepka and Rahm both carded 73s whilst Spieth signed for a 71.

The aforementioned McIlroy is way down the leaderboard on 10-over.

McIlroy later told reporters he did not care if he made the cut this week as he let the media have it.
