Rory McIlroy will look to build on his fast start at the US Open when he heads for his second round at Brookline at 6.25pm (UK Time).
McIlroy, who landed his 21st PGA Tour title with a successful title defence of the RBC Canadian Open last week, carded an opening 3-under 67 to lie just one shot behind day-one leader Adam Hadwin of Canada.
English duo Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose got off to solid start with a round of 2-under 68, a score that was matched by former US Open champion and Saudi golf rebel Dustin Johnson.
US PGA champion Justin Thomas and last year's US Open champion Jon Rahm find themselves a further shot back on 1-under par alongside two-time major champion Collin Morikawa.
Phil Mickelson returned to major championship golf on his 52nd birthday but it was a day to forget for the Saudi golf rebel with an opening 8-over 78.
