How do golf trousers impact a golfer's swing and overall performance on the course?
While seemingly a fairly small detail when making up a golf outfit, trousers are of paramount importance in ensuring comfort and mobility throughout the golf swing.
Golf pants are engineered primarily to be flexible and breathable, which impacts real-world performance on the golf course in a number of ways. First and foremost, they keep you comfortable, made of softer, more breathable materials that wick sweat away effectively during warmer play and dry quickly if they get wet for whatever reason.
Equally as importantly, golf trousers are engineered to flex and move with you throughout the unique movement of the golf swing. Most golf pants are made of fabrics that flex in a number of ways, allowing them to twist, crease and bend to allow you to move throughout your swing unencumbered. The less restricted you feel throughout your swing, the better you'll play.
How do different materials affect the performance of golf trousers?
Golf trousers come in a huge range of different materials, each of which have differing properties in how they translate to performance out on the course.
Most performance golf trousers are made of synthetic materials like polyester, often woven with stretchier materials like elastane to enhance their stretchy properties, which are preferred for their breathability and quick-drying properties.
Some trousers, however, use more natural materials like cotton and wool, often incorporated into a blend for a little extra stretch. While there's nothing inherently better or worse about these types of golf trousers, they're generally marketed towards those who want a slightly more traditional look and feel in their golf attire.
Are there specific features in golf trousers that cater to different body types?
Most golf trousers are engineered to be fairly well-suited to an array of body types, their stretchy materials generally lending themselves to more forgiveness in terms of fit and feel. It's worth noting, however, that a fit that works for one body shape may not work for another, however.
More fashion-forward golf apparel brands, like J.Lindeberg and Peter Millar, offer golf trousers in a wider array of fits across both the waist and leg length to help golfers of different heights and body profiles obtain a fit more tailored to them.
While most golf trousers are offered in a tailored or regular fit to cater for the widest range of players possible, we'd recommend larger golfers look for a silhouette that provides more room through the thighs and waist to ensure peak comfort out on the course.
