It's rare that we see something entirely new in the world of golf equipment, but every now and then a truly innovative product manages to become an organic viral sensation based on the simple fact that, well, it's just pretty damn cool.

This occurred late last year with the quiet launch of a new putter brand, the distinctively named Sausage Golf. Sausage is the brainchild of Dave Rowles, an industrial designer who grew up in Manchester but who now designs yachts on the Cote D'Azur. The name, in case you were wondering, is based on the founder's childhood nickname.

The brand's offering is simple, yet incredibly innovative: a range of incredibly premium, entirely modular putters that can be adjusted for both left and right-handed play, and configured to provide centre-shafted low torque, toe hang and face-balanced options in the one single club.

Sausage shared a series of videos detailing the product late last year, upon which the brand's first batch of putters immediately sold out (the fact that Rick Shiels devoted an entire video to the putter didn't hurt).

The innuendo-laden name aside, Sausage's putters look and feel absolutely beautiful. Each is milled on the Cote D'Azur from 6061 aluminium, with Sausage placing an emphasis on each putter providing crisp feedback and a reassuringly firm feel that doesn't feel harsh.

The flagship design, the Boudin Noir, is a sleek, simple rounded mallet with an all-black finish and a simple white (even the adjustable screws are worked into the design in an aesthetic way).

"The response to our first two releases told us everything we needed to know," says Rowles. "Golfers understood what we were trying to do and they valued the ability to genuinely tune a putter to their stroke and feel preferences."

The package is rounded off with matching black shafts, grips and head covers, and Sausage have engineered a clever visual aid on the grip that, when matched up with the aid on the putter head at address, encourages a natural 2-degree forward press.

The Boudin Noir is joined by the return of the Design no. 2: a rounded blade shape that shares the Boudin Noir's modularity but in a more minimal, traditional profile. Design No.2 is milled from 303 Stainless Steel, similar to blades from the likes of Bettinardi and Scotty Cameron, offering a denser feel that provides more responsiveness to make up for its compact profile.

“Boudin Noir and Design no. 2 represent our core philosophy of considered design, meaningful adjustability and feedback through the hands," continues Rowles. "Bringing them back in limited numbers allows us to stay true to how we want to build Sausage Golf while introducing the putters to a wider audience for the first time.”

Both are available now in limited quantities at Sausage's website, but be quick. They won't last long.
