Scotty Cameron’s new £729 putters are here – but what makes them so expensive?
The limited-edition Phantom OC Spec III models bring low-torque technology, an all-black finish and Scotty Cameron’s latest take on alignment to golf shops this week.
Scotty Cameron has launched two new limited-edition Phantom OC Spec III putters, bringing its low-torque Onset Centre technology to the Phantom 5 and Phantom 11R mallet designs.
The new models, which arrive in golf shops priced an eye-watering £729 on September 24, feature an all-black finish, high-contrast alignment lines and Scotty Cameron's distinctive approach to reducing face rotation through the stroke.
The OC, or Onset Centre, design positions the shaft behind the leading edge of the putter head and in line with its centre of gravity. The aim is to reduce torque and encourage a more square-to-the-path putting stroke.
Both new models take their inspiration from Scotty Cameron's Spec III performance builds, with a glare-free black PVD finish complemented by three high-contrast sightlines designed to frame the ball at address.
The Phantom 5 OC Spec III uses a compact wingback shape that has become a familiar sight on professional tours. It features a full-face Studio Carbon Steel insert with chain-link face milling, designed to provide a softer sound and feel at impact.
The Phantom 11R OC Spec III, meanwhile, takes a larger, rounded mallet profile with high-MOI characteristics aimed at stability through the stroke. It also uses full-face chain-link milling and is available for left-handed golfers.
Both putters come with a black steel shaft and custom black mid-size Matador grip, completing the stealthy look.
Scotty Cameron describes its OC models as its lowest-torque designs, although it stops short of calling them zero-torque putters.
The company says the design is intended to suit golfers who prefer to minimise face rotation and promote a straighter-back-and-through stroke.
The putters use a one-degree shaft lean and 15-gram heavier head weights, with the shaft and head combination designed to retain feel and feedback despite the low-torque construction.
Both models are available in 33, 34 and 35-inch lengths, with 3.5 degrees of loft and a 70-degree lie angle.
The Phantom 5 OC Spec III is available right-handed, while the Phantom 11R OC Spec III is offered in both right- and left-handed configurations.
Limited quantities will arrive in golf shops from September 24, with a recommended retail price of £729.
