Phil Mickelson's reputation as a high-roller gambler precedes him, but the extent of his wagering and his losses is not public knowledge.

What we do know, is that it got to the point where it was 'reckless'. Mickelson told us as much when he returned to public life following his self-imposed exile from the game after *those* comments about his dealings with the Saudis.

In Mickelson's words, his gambling addiction was "embarrassing".

"I had to address it. And I've been addressing it for a number of years," Mickelson previously told SI. "And for hundreds of hours of therapy.

"I feel good where I'm at there. My family and I are and have been financially secure for some time.

"Gambling has been part of my life ever since I can remember. But about a decade ago is when I would say it became reckless."

Mickelson claims that he has been true to his word and hasn't gambled in years.

"Almost a billionaire now. Thanks for asking," Mickelson wrote in a thread on Twitter to one user who told him that he's still 'a miserable angry old man' despite all the money he apparently has after joining LIV

Mickelson's response to that was to say:

"Trying to find the best and most effective ways to give it to those most in need. I can be grateful for all I have and still not be ok with all the monopolistic stuff that I know goes on within the golf world."

Mickelson all-but confirmed his multi-year LIV Golf contract was worth $200m last June.

His true net worth is not public knowledge, but that is quite a claim. Forbes estimated that Tiger Woods reached billionaire status in 2022.

Over the years, there have been some legendary stories that have emerged about Mickelson's gambling.

One of the best came the first time Lefty and Woods squared off for money in 1998. Mickelson won the match.

Apparently after beating Woods, Mickelson left photocopies of the big cat's $100 bills in his locker along with a note: "Just wanted to you to know Benji and his friends are very happy in their new home."
