It's time for the third major championship of the LPGA Tour season, and one of the most lucrative events on the calendar: the US Women's Open.

The storylines are endless this week as the 78th US Women's Open heads to the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

Minjee Lee, ranked sixth in the world, is the defending champion after winning the tournament by four strokes at Pine Needles last year.

Rose Zhang, who's from California and just recently turned professional after two seasons playing for the Californian-based Stanford University golf team, will be making her second appearance at a major championship as a pro.

Zhang made the jump from collegiate golf last month after winning back-to-back NCAA individual titles, and then won in her first event as a professional.

In her professional major debut just over a week ago at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the 20-year-old made a late Sunday charge, but just narrowly finished three-strokes back in a tie for eighth.

Ruoning Yin, also 20, won the tournament by one stroke for her second LPGA Tour title and first major.

Nelly Korda, the second-ranked player in the world, will be looking to bounce back after a tough missed cut at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship after shooting rounds of 76 and 77 at Batlusrol.

This week's US Women's Open is one of two tournaments tied for the largest purse this year - the other being the Women's PGA - with a $10m purse.

The winner will earn $1.8m and second will receive $1.08m.
