Twins lose out in the final

It may be known next year as the Sunningdale "Family" Foursomes as the final day of the 59th Sunningdale Foursomes was contested by a group of golfers all related to each other.

The semi finals took place in the morning with the in from Head Twins, Sam and Jo taking on the laborious Darren Paris and much quicker partner, Neil Hansen. And in the bottom group, Mother and son, Carole and Richard Caldwell played Kim Andrew and her brother-in-law Steve.

The twins, with the aid of a Golfmagic caddie for Jo and Sam's coach Nick Bradley taking over duties on the bag, dispatched the Hansen and Parris pairing 4&2 in the morning.

While the Caldwell's, member's of the Sunningdale club, beat the Andrew's family at the 19th.

The final would be the Head's toughest match, no shots were given to them for the first time in the tournament and even after a spectacular birdie at the first hole, the Head's went on to lose the next three without doing much wrong.

The big hitting Richard Caldwell, a +1 handicap combined well with his mother's sharp short game and infallible putting to turn three up against the Twins. Carole Caldwell, a former Curtis Cup player holed every clutch putt she had during the final, but Sam and Jo made every effort to make a comeback.

Just as the match was tightening up, the Heads reducing the deficit to two down on 13th, Richard Caldwell holed a putt longer than I make phone calls on the 14th. And with the Head's ten-foot birdie putt slipping by the edge, the match was back to three up.

Sam Head drove at the long par three 15th to within six feet to claim a hole back. But at the sixteenth, Sam missed her opportunity to close the gap and pile on the pressure, missing a downhill five footer for par. Somehow, the Caldwell's scraped a half, without visiting the fairway once to remain two up.

Even an arrow straight, piercing three iron to twenty feet from Jo at the 17th was not enough as the Caldwell family took the spoils, winning the match 2&1.

But the Twins looked on the tournament as good practice for the Solheim Cup in October, both hoping for a pick from Captain Dale Reid. And in this form, Reid would be making an excellent choice as these two gel well together in the heat of matchplay.

"It feels as if we haven't lost anything this week", said Jo. "We beat some very good pairings this week and went all the way. If we had lost in the first round, we would have been losers, but to lose in the final is no disgrace…a great week's work".

Consolation came in the guise of a £1250 cheque to each of the Twins, which should help alleviate the cost of yesterday's shopping spree around Sunningdale!

Semi-finals: S & J Head (Goodwood) bt N Hansen & D Parris (North Foreland) 3 & 2; C & R Caldwell (Sunningdale) bt S & K Andrew (Clitheroe) at 19th.

Final: Caldwell's bt Heads 2 & 1.
