Gates returns to winning ways
Jersey's Martin Gates wins the first Europro Tour event in Saunton
Former European tour player Martin Gates from Jersey made a winning return
from injury to claim the £7,000 first prize in the Euro Pro Tour event at
Saunton. In blustery conditions, Gates added a superb second round 68 to
his first round 70 for a 4 under par winning total. This was good enough
for a one shot winning margin from 3 players including first round leader
Michael Welch and local favourite Simon McCarthy.
Gates made 7 birdies for his 68, holing good putts on the front nine,
hitting it close on 12 and 18 and getting up and down from the front edge of
the par five 15th. The tougher second day conditions affected the overnight
leaders all of whom dropped shots over the back nine.
Gates, whose last tournament was the Lancome Trophy in 1998, has been
sidelined with a shoulder injury and will be playing on the Challenge Tour
this year. With form like this he will be back on the big stage soon.
