JB Holmes, regarded by many as one of the slowest players to ever grace the PGA Tour, has been forced to withdraw from this week's Wells Fargo Championship due to a back injury.

Holmes won this tournament by one stroke over Jim Furyk back in 2014.

The American is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour with his last victory dating back to the 2019 Genesis Open.

He's been replaced in the field this week by Austin Cook.

Ryan Brehm also withdrew from round one of the Wells Fargo Championship and he has been replaced by Paul Haley II.

Andrew Putnam also withdrew but midway through the first round.

Holmes is considered by the majority of ardent PGA Tour fans as one of the slowest players on the circuit.

He was once heavily blasted on social media for what was deemed painfully slow play at the Honda Classic.

Holmes also ruffled plenty of feathers for his snail-pace play at the 2019 Open.

Despite once being ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Holmes now finds himself in a lowly 1,433rd.

That's an even worse position than Tiger Woods, who finds himself at 1,009th.

Patrick Cantlay has taken the majority of flak for the slow play brigade on the PGA Tour this season.

Cantlay has seemingly been ripped by just about everyone in the sport over his pace of play, most notably at The Masters last month.

He was also thrown under the microsope at the RBC Heritage, the following week.

Jordan Spieth and eventual winner Matt Fitzpatrick, who played alongside Cantlay in the final round at Hilton Head, were said to be "pretty upset" by Cantlay's pace of play, particularly in how long he took over one shot on the 14th hole that Sunday.

Fitzpatrick's caddie Billy Foster was also left exasperated on one hole in the final round.

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion recently admitted that he is "slower than average" but that his groups "have always been in position the whole time."

He's now acquired the services of Woods' former caddie Joe LaCava.
