Tiger Woods clinched the inaugural ZOZO Championship in Japan to tie Sam Snead's longstanding record of 82 wins on the PGA Tour.

Woods, 43, came back on Monday morning to complete his final seven holes and his closing 67 saw out a commanding three-stroke victory over home favourite Hideki Matsuyama on 19-under par. Rory McIlroy rallied for a tie for third alongside Sungjae Im on 13-under par.

Woods claimed his first major title since the 2008 US Open when slipping on the green jacket at The Masters in April, leaving him three majors shy of major record holder Jack Nicklaus' haul of 18 titles.

Nicklaus was 46 when he chalked up his final major title at the 1986 Masters.

But Woods entered the PGA Tour record books, yet again, with his victory at the first-ever ZOZO Championship in Japan on Monday.

Snead was aged 52 when he won for the final time on the PGA Tour.

"As far as playing until 52, I hope that's the case," said Woods.

"If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have given you a different answer, but certainly the future looks brighter than it has.

"The body can't do what it used to but I can still think my way around the golf course.

"I know how to play and I was able to do that this week. There was a time if I didn't know if I would play again so I am very appreciative."

Woods is now up to sixth in the world rankings following his latest victory.
