Déjà vu for Charlie Woods as son of golf legend bounces back at Junior PGA Championship

Charlie Woods produced a timely recovery in the second round of the Junior PGA Championship, carding a 2-under-par 70 to move through to the final rounds of the tournament.

The 17-year-old, son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, started the day needing a strong response after a difficult opening round left him close to the cut line. 

Woods opened the championship with a 3-over-par 75 at Fields Ranch in Frisco, Texas, leaving little room for error in his second outing.

He delivered the required response with a steadier display, improving his position and ensuring his place among the players progressing in the event. 

Woods' two-round total of 1-over 145 was enough to see him advance, with the top 60 players and ties moving into the closing stages of the championship.

He is currently in a share of 46th place on the leaderboard.

The second-round performance marked a significant improvement from his opening effort. 

Woods' bogey on the 3rd hole was his only blemish of the day. He made birdie on the 2nd, 9th and 18th. 

The round of the day belonged to Ainslie Stanford, who signed for a 9-under 63. 

Kailer Stone, who led after the opening round, maintained his advantage at the top of the leaderboard, sitting on 9-under overall. 

Woods entered this tournament having narrowly missed out on a place in the match-play stage at last week's U.S. Junior Amateur following a dramatic play-off at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania. 

Again, he was forced to recover strongly after a difficult opening round. 

He opened the championship with a 5-over-par 76 before responding with an even-par 70 in the second round. 

His 36-hole total of 5-over-par left him tied for 63rd, putting him into a 14-player playoff for the final two match-play places.

Woods' hopes ended on the first playoff hole. 

Needing a birdie to stay alive, he attacked the par-5 opening hole but failed to convert, eventually making bogey and being eliminated. 

Woods also appeared to get distracted by a spectator's phone before he played his chip. 

Still, it represented his best finish in the U.S. Junior Amateur to date. 

His father the U.S. Junior Amateur three consecutive times from 1991 to 1993, and the championship trophy now bears his name.

Charlie has built a steady junior golf career whilst competing under the spotlight. 

He claimed his first victory at the 2025 AJGA Team TaylorMade invitational. 

The victory saw him jump up to 21st in the AJGA rankings. He is currently 181st in the standings. 

Charlie's good friend, Miles Russell, is the top-ranked player in the boys' division.
