Former major champion to make first PGA Tour start since brain surgery

Gary Woodland is set to make his first PGA Tour start since undergoing brain surgery.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion has been listed among the 144-player field for the forthcoming Sony Open in Hawaii.

Woodland has been out of action for three months after having a lesion removed from his brain.

Initially, the golfer decided he wanted to have the symptoms treated by medication but he and his family made the decision to try to remove it via surgery.

He underwent the procedure on 18 September and later posted a statement on social media saying the "majority of the tumour" was removed.

The 39-year-old has won four times on the PGA Tour. He had a mixed 2022-2023 season. He made 18 cuts from 24 starts and posted six top-25 finishes.

Woodland is not the only high-profile name to make his return after a considerable amount of time on the sidelines.

Will Zalatoris will be making his first official start since he was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Masters on the eve of the major because of a back injury.

Zalatoris did play in Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge in December, posting scores of 81-68-79-71 to finish 11 over to finish dead last.
