Golf fans divided by Jordan Spieth's comments after PGA Tour play-off exit: "He is delusional"
Jordan Spieth's season on the PGA Tour ended prematurely at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Golf fans have been debating whether or not Jordan Spieth needs to make drastic changes after the American produced another underwhelming season on the PGA Tour.
Spieth needed a strong week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to have any chance of advancing to the second leg of the play-offs in St. Louis.
But the 33-year-old came up just shy, bringing the curtain down on another lacklustre campaign by his lofty standards.
Spieth failed to produce a single top-10 finish, was a non-factor in the majors and remains winless since the 2022 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Yet the three-time major champion is remarkably upbeat about his prospects.
"It's funny, I just feel like I'm kind of getting back to playing really good golf, like it's close to kicking off, and I'm not going to play a tournament for a long time," he said.
"In some ways I feel like I'm leaving some out there, and in some ways it's a good thing because like I mentioned after the first round, this will be the last time I finish like this for a while.
"I'm very, very confident in what's coming. I just ran out of steam and maybe made a couple bad decisions over about a six-week stretch on what I was working on, and I just didn't quite have enough time to make up for it."
Spieth's comments drew a mixed reaction from X users, with many believing now is the time for change.
Some have suggested Spieth should switch coaches or even dump his long-time caddie Michael Greller.
Here's a selection:
@Gandolph41
Change your putter, get a new coach who gets you back to playing naturally (improved this year) and time for a new caddie who will keep you from making dumb decisions and spending the day making lame excuses for poor shots. Stop making excuses.
@BobRoge321
That's all we've been hearing for the last 4 years! Quit giving him exemptions into signature events and let’s see how he does?
@CsFinn
Love Jordan but just can't count on him anymore. Sad to watch.
@KarstenKrogh14
Same every season. He's been done for years. He always chokes these days.
@c_cronenweth
This dude has become delusional. He's nowhere near close to contending. Iron play is god awful and putting isn't much better. He needs a full reset. Go to a mallet for Christ's sake and sack Cam McCormick and see Randy Smith. I'd even let Greller walk. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
@SimbaRW
He is delusional. He is getting worse by the year.
@KJ_HEINZ
He pouted and did his usual talking to himself and his caddy for the majority of the round. Is ANYONE going to give him some tough love? WTF is he doing? Used to be one of my favourite players. I can't watch him act like he's a 14-year-old anymore.
Spieth wasn't the only player who left Memphis with some thinking to do.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy made his first appearance since The Open in July and toiled to a 66th-place finish.
The 37-year-old said he "felt lost" after finishing 25 strokes behind champion Scottie Scheffler.
"I'm so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance," he said.
"I've just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.
"Obviously didn't come in here with a ton of reps, (it) almost felt like the more the week went on the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit.
"I guess [it was] nice to shake the rust off a little bit but I'm going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week.
"To me it's more about the execution of what I'm doing right now, and the execution wasn't there this week."
