Max Homa says he's looking forward to having butterflies in his stomach after he set up a golden opportunity to earn his first PGA Tour win in more than two years.
Homa last recorded a victory at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines but has been on a downward trajectory since then.
A string of missed cuts at the beginning of the season saw him tumble down the world rankings and a frustrated Homa looked completely out of sorts on the golf course.
But he has a golden opportunity to get back into the winner's circle at the John Deere Classic.
Homa went round TPC Deere Run in 3-under 68 on Saturday to trail 54-hole leader - and defending champion - Davis Thompson by one stroke.
David Lipsky, Emiliano Grillo and Brian Campbell are also tied for second on 14-under.
"Golf is just been very boring for me this year," Homa said. "I haven't had a whole lot of stress, and you want to be stressed out.
"So I look forward to the butterflies in the morning; I look forward to the first tee shot.
"It's just nice to get to feel that again. It's been a while."
Thompson earned his first PGA Tour title here 12 months ago.
The 26-year-old birdied his final two holes to snatch the lead.
"Yeah, I mean, I'm really excited," Thompson said. "Excited to go compete. I feel like I've been working hard.
"Yeah, golf is a weird game. Feel like I was kind of trending last year into this tournament and obviously played well.
"This year kind of feels the same way. You know, yeah, like you said, I can't really focus on last year. Excited to be in this position again this year."
Ben Griffin, Jason Day and Tom Kim were among the notables to miss the cut here at the halfway stage.
