Jordan Spieth assesses current Ryder Cup chances: "I'm mostly pleased with everything"
PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth says he's 'mostly pleased' with his game as he assessed his Ryder Cup chances.
Jordan Spieth says he's mostly pleased with his game as he assessed his current chances of making his fifth Ryder Cup appearance.
Spieth arrives at the Travelers Championship having endured a mixed campaign so far.
His season started in February after he endured the longest injury layoff of his career following surgery on his wrist last summer.
Spieth posted a top 15 finish at The Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
Although he never contended at Oakmont, rounds of 70-75-71-72 saw Spieth finish in the top 25 at last week's US Open.
Despite Spieth's optimism, it is looking likely at this point he may need to rely on a captain's pick from Keegan Bradley for the biennial showdown at Bethpage Black in September.
Spieth is currently 22nd in the US Ryder Cup standings.
"I'm pleased with mostly everything," Spieth said when asked to assess the current state of his game.
"Last week I had a lot of momentum, and then I made a triple with just making a mistake on a couple putts, hitting them a little bit too hard where I wanted to make the par, didn't want to make the bogey.
"I held patient all week and made the one US Open mistake you can't make, which is to try to do something a little special.
"Other weeks it's, man, I felt like I hit a good tee shot, and I missed it by five yards, I missed it by three, something like that, where there was a stroke or two difference.
"It feels like I just need to stay the course and good things are coming. I think the biggest thing for me right now is not trying -- it's going to be harder and harder as we get to the end of the season to try to force results given I only have however many events left now.
"I don't have the runway that you had in February. So if it all comes together by the end of the season, great.
"If not, it's already been pretty much a better season, you know, on the better end of what I could have asked for coming off surgery and starting late into the season."
Spieth said he may need to add another event to his schedule.
"This is a big week," he said. "The Open is a big week. Then look to the playoffs, and there's a chance I'd add an event somewhere. I'm not sure.
"It will just kind of depend on the standings because the idea is to make it to East Lake."
New PGA Tour boss 'a steal', says Spieth
The PGA Tour have confirmed the appointment of former NFL executive Brian Rolapp as their new chief executive.
Several players have already weighed in with their verdict after meeting with the father of four.
Scottie Scheffler liked what he heard. As did Xander Schauffele.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy believes the experience Rolapp will bring to the role will be 'amazing'.
Spieth said he really liked his first impression of Rolapp.
"I think he seems like a steal from the most successful sports organization in the world and someone who is on the path to becoming potentially commissioner over there to coming over and taking the PGA Tour forward," Spieth said.
"I think he resonated a lot with some of the players about challenging some of the networks on how they're showing the product.
"Then being open and willing to adapt and change while maintaining the integrity of the game. I think he said all the right things.
"From other players to other people that are sponsors that have reached out to me since have all been super excited about that hire and that we're very lucky to have him."
