PGA Tour star Justin Thomas makes alarming admission: "I took for granted..."

PGA Tour star Justin Thomas has admitted he 'took for granted' how good he was during the earlier part of his career as he strives to sort his form out.

Justin Thomas says he 'took for granted' how good he was during a stretch that saw him lift multiple PGA Tour titles and win his first major before he was 25 years old.

Thomas comes into the Wells Fargo Championship with results so far this year painting a mixed picture.

Of the nine starts he has made, he has finished inside the top-10 on three occasions. He has also missed three cuts.

For some reason, the golfer has not been the pillar of consistency that we have become accustomed to.

The good rounds have been really good but the bad, by his standards, were atrocious.

Take, for example, the second round of the 2024 Masters where he looked assured to make the cut but inexplicably dropped seven shots over the final four holes to miss the weekend by one and move the line.

Thomas has made some difficult decisions to try and turn things around. For one, he parted ways with legendary caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay.

And he told GOLF earlier in the week that a new driver is also in the bag and it has already led to an increase of 10 yards off the tee.

Asked by a reporter at Quail Hollow Golf Club how close he feels to returning to the player that saw him win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills two years ago, Thomas said he feels his game is 'more complete than it did back then'.

He added: "It's just about getting in the right head space and executing when you need to, just plotting my way around the golf course better.

"I think I took for granted how good I did that there for a couple years.

"I just would accidentally find myself in contention in tournaments way more often by not forcing the issue or not making things harder than it needed to be.

"That's what I would say more what I'm trying to kind of get into because, like I said, I feel great about my golf.

"I really have kind of toward the end of last year but especially the start of this year and as the year's gone on."

Thomas is playing the opening two rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship alongside Taylor Pendrith and Akshay Bhatia.

Should he win the signature event, it would take his tally of PGA Tour titles to 16.

Next week he will head to Valhalla Golf Club in search of his third major.

He has already been on a scouting trip having not played the course for 10 years.

"I remembered more than I thought I would," he said.

"It hasn't changed a lot, more so just some new tees and cleared some trees out to make it way more spectator friendly.

"I feel like you'll be able to see throughout the course more, which I thought was a great look. But yeah, it was great.

"I mean, I have some pretty cool memories of Valhalla and I'm excited to hopefully make some of my own but on the other side of the ropes for a change."
