PGA Tour star's Ryder Cup hopes in big jeopardy after confirming surgery
PGA Tour star Billy Horschel to undergo surgery and he will now miss the rest of the majors this season, and probably the Ryder Cup too.
PGA Tour star Billy Horschel has confirmed he will undergo hip surgery next week and therefore be forced to withdraw from the PGA Championship.
Horschel, 38, joined Scottie Scheffler as the only two players in the world's top 25 to bypass this week's $20m Truist Championship on the PGA Tour.
But now the reason for Horschel withdrawing from the recent Zurich Classic of New Orleans and this week's Signature Event on the PGA Tour schedule has come to light.
Horschel, who is currently ranked 24th in the world, took to his social media channels today to confirm he will now undergo right hip surgery early next week in Colorado.
It will mean Horschel misses out on golf's second major of the season at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club from 15-18 May.
Horschel will then need some time to recover, and he believes he will not return to competitive action again until late summer or early fall.
That means Horschel will also miss out on competing in the remaining two majors on the schedule at the U.S. Open from 12-15 June and The Open from 17-20 July.
Another big blow for Horschel will likely be missing out on a first appearance in the U.S. Ryder Cup team, something he has regularly set his heart on.
Horschel has only ever represented the United States in pro team competition at the 2022 Presidents Cup.
He went 1-2-0 that week at Quail Hollow Club as the stars and stripes ran out commanding 17.5-12.5 victors against the Internationals.
Horschel currently ranks 16th the standings for a place on Keegan Bradley's U.S. Ryder Cup team to face Luke Donald's Europe at Bethpage Black in New York from 26-28 September.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner will be well down the Ryder Cup rankings by the time he returns to competition, and likely out of the reckoning for one of Bradley's six captain's picks.
It also remains to be seen whether Horschel will be fit enough to return to defend his BMW PGA Championship title on the famed Wentworth West Course in England, a tournament he has won twice on the DP World Tour since 2021.
Horschel has been struggling with his hip for a while, and the injury would likely indicate his recent lacklustre performances on Tour.
The 2014 FedEx Cup champion has only finished inside the top 10 twice in 12 starts so far in 2025.
Horschel took to social media to confirm his hip surgery and he also posted a video message to his fans.
