Scottie Scheffler bagged his sixth win of the year as he came from behind to deny Ryder Cup team-mate Ben Griffin at the Procore Championship in California.

The world No 1 fired a final-round 67 to clinch victory by one shot over long-time leader Griffin, whose challenge floundered despite a red-hot start on Sunday.

Scheffler was just two shots behind overnight following his superb Saturday 64, and that gap increased when Griffin raced out of the blocks with three straight birdies.

But Griffin's bogey at the 4th was a momentum killer, and Scheffler went calmly about his business to apply the pressure, picking up three front-nine birdies in his outward 32.

With US Walker Cup star Jackson Koivan, playing with Griffin in the final pairing, unable to maintain his bid for a rare amateur win, the inward run developed into a two-horse race.

Scheffler gouged a wedge out of the thick rough to tap-in range at the 10th to tie the lead, but he then three-putted the next before atoning for that error with another birdie at 12.

The PGA and Open champion led outright when Griffin ended a run of nine consecutive pars with a bogey at the 14th, and the top two both birdied the long 15th.

Scheffler was unable to make birdie at the par-5 18th after finding sand with his drive, but a solid par kept him at 19-under and left him an anxious wait to see if Griffin could close with a 4 to force a playoff.

Ryder Cup rookie Griffin did find the green in two blows, but his long-range putt for eagle pulled up six feet short and his next effort for the tie grazed the left edge of the cup to confirm Scheffler as champion.

"Overall it was a good prep week getting ready for the Ryder Cup," said Scheffler. "As far as the tournament went, I did some good stuff over the course of four days, especially over the weekend.

"I felt like my game got better as the week went on and played some really nice golf Saturday and Sunday to be sitting here."

Four of the 10 Team USA players in the field finished inside the top-10, and Scheffler believes the bodes well for Bethpage.

"It was definitely nice to see some of my team-mates on the leaderboard," he added. "Ben and I had a good battle today and the guys definitely stayed sharp this week.

"I always focus as much as I can on my preparation going into tournaments, that's what gives me confidence, and I feel like I'm as prepared as possible for the Ryder Cup.

"I think we're all excited for the tournament to get started. We've got three days in New York to compete and have fun. We're all looking forward to it."

Koivan picked up a couple of late birdies to card a 71 and earn a tie for fourth on 16-under, which was one shot better than JJ Spaun after the US Open champion closed with an impressive 66.

Cameron Young's 67 got him into the top-10 on 12-under, with Sam Burns two shots further adrift after he was also 5-under par for the final day.
