Justin Rose and Gary Player are collaborating with European Golf Design in a huge refurbishment of the Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf and Spa as they consider a bid to host the Ryder Cup.

Luton Hoo owners Arora Group have put together a £170m upgrade package for the resort, with Rose and Player on board to help redesign the Championship course.

The project will take around two-and-a-half years to complete, and it is "very conceivable" that the owners will put in a bid to stage the Ryder Cup in 2035.

European Golf Design also worked with Ryder Cup Europe to upgrade previous venues at Le Golf National and Marco Simone, while the construction company that have been commissioned also built Adare Manor, host venue for the next Ryder Cup in two years' time.

The biennial showpiece has not been held in England since Europe's memorable victory over the USA in 2002.

"We are very excited about the whole project," said Arora Group chairman Surinder Arora. "If you want the best you have to bring the best team on board.

"Work has started [on the golf course] and we have chosen contractors Atlantic Golf Construction from Ireland. They also built Adare Manor which is where the next Ryder Cup is, so we are not skimping anywhere."

Architect Gary Johnston of European Golf Design added: "Luton Hoo is a truly special landscape. This site has the space and the access and everything else you would need.

Rose, who made his seventh Ryder Cup appearance in Europe's 15-13 victory at Bethpage Black last month, has previously worked with European Golf Design on Close House near Newcastle, which hosted the British Masters in 2017 and 2020.

Arora added that working with Rose and Player on the project had been "absolutely amazing", and he also made an ambitious claim about his vision for the resort.

"It was always my dream to create the Augusta of Europe," he said.
