Rory McIlroy comforts wife Erica as fan throws drink at them during Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy comforts wife Erica after a drink was shockingly thrown at them during the second day of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.
Rory McIlroy was seen comforting his wife Erica Stoll after someone allegedly threw a drink at them following his Saturday fourballs match at the Ryder Cup.
McIlroy, 36, had to deal with arguably the most hostile crowd he has ever experienced on day two in New York.
GolfMagic was inside the ropes following McIlroy at various stages and some of the comments he received were a disgrace.
Many of which were while he was standing over the ball or about to hit a putt as well.
On the 5th hole, McIlroy backed off and refused to putt out until a minority of American fans piped down with their barrage of abuse.
"I'm not going to putt until they shut up," McIlroy was heard saying.
Yet despite playing in such horrendous conditions, McIlroy still managed to win both of his foursomes and fourballs matches to remain unbeaten for the week.
McIlroy teamed up with Tommy Fleetwood to once again take care of Collin Morikawa and Harris English in the morning foursomes.
Minutes before wrapping up the match with a stunning approach shot into the 16th, McIlroy stepped off the shot to tell a group of spectators to "shut the f** up".
That came after they were still hurling abuse towards him while he was setup over the ball.
McIlroy then returned back to the course after the morning foursomes to join Shane Lowry for the afternoon fourballs.
In a back and forth match, Lowry and McIlroy held their nerves to see out a 2up victory against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young.
McIlroy has been in imperious form at Bethpage and he remains unbeaten with 3.5 points from four sessions.
He will now face Scottie Scheffler in the singles, where a victory will see him pull level in a tie for sixth with late great Seve Ballesteros on the all-time European points list.
McIlroy, who now has 21.5 points at the Ryder Cup, today moved ahead of Jose Maria Olazabal into seventh position.
Scheffler, meanwhile, has become the first player to go 0-4 in the first four sessions of a Ryder Cup since 1967.
The two points McIlroy contributed on Saturday sees Luke Donald's European defending champions march seven points clear (11.5-4.5) ahead of the final session of 12 singles on Sunday.
Europe now need just 2.5 points to retain the Ryder Cup and 3 points to win it outright.

But back to the top of the story, and the abuse McIlroy received got so out of hand during the afternoon fourballs that extra state troopers were called in to eject spectators who crossed the line with insults and abuse aimed at the Northern Irishman.
On one hole, Lowry attempted to go after an unruly spectator himself, but he was held back by his caddie Darren Reynolds, all while McIlroy was in full flow with his tee shot.

McIlroy's wife Erica was also reportedly subject to abuse on the course, and at one stage she is understood to have left the match because it was all getting too much.
After McIlroy and Lowry won their fourballs match, they went over to watch the remaining groups out on the course.
One American fan reportedly then threw a drink in the direction of McIlroy and Erica at the back of the 17th green.
In a video that has since gone viral, McIlroy can be seen comforting his wife and then helping diffuse the situation by walking away together with other members of the European team.

Both McIlroy and Lowry were asked to speak about the hostile atmosphere they experienced on day two after their 2up win on the 18th green.
"We're just so happy that we could get a blue point on the board," said a relieved McIlroy, who admitted he would sleep well tonight after what he had been through over the two Saturday sessions.
"It's our first full point as a partnership. We weren't able to get one at Whistling Straits. We got a halve yesterday and a full one today.
"Just really happy that I'm able to walk inside the ropes with this man, and he was there for me today. Yeah, I said it in the previous interview but all the credit for this win today goes to Shane."
Lowry added: "Look, we knew what we were going to get coming here. It was a very tough day. Being out with Rory doesn't make it any easier. I think he's getting the brunt of it.
"But yeah, look, I think we dealt with it very well. You know, I said at the start of the week, I don't know what way I'm going to deal with it but I'm going to be myself and I was myself out there today and thankfully that worked."
European captain Donald also spoke about the hostile crowd and he felt he very much crossed the line where insults and shouting out while players are setting up to the ball is concerned.
