Luke Donald’s side dominated the morning foursomes session and won the first three matches of the week, with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele putting the only red on the board as they held off a valiant fightback from Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.

The US players, backed by President Donald Trump on the first tee, made a bright start to the afternoon fourballs, but Europe turned the tide and threatened to take another 3-1 win in the session.

Jon Rahm was magnificent as he and Sepp Straka beat an out-of-sorts Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose came from behind to edge out Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were 2 up after 11 holes against Cantlay and Sam Burns, but Cantlay inspired an American fightback to earn a half-point in the final encounter of the first day.

Friday Foursomes: USA 1-3 Europe

McIlroy and Fleetwood won the first point of the week, and they were 6-under for the day in their crushing 5&4 win over an outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg also poured in six birdies as they took advantage of a lacklustre effort from Scheffler and Russell Henley, the European pair storming to a surprisingly easy 5&3 triumph in match 3.

And in the top match, Tyrrell Hatton and Rahm recovered from a sluggish start to overpower DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, running out 4&3 winners to leave US captain Keegan Bradley looking pale and pensive.

The raucous New Oak fans were in full voice after DeChambeau’s monster drive found the fairway at the opening hole and set up a winning birdie, but the battling European pair turned the match shortly before the turn.

Their wayward golf over the first few holes was quickly forgotten as they won the 7th with a par before Rahm’s 12-footer for birdie at the next gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

The LIV Golf pairing reeled off three straight birdies from the 12th, two of them for wins, and another at 15 wrapped up a convincing 4&3 victory in the top match.

Fitzpatrick played arguably the best golf of the morning, continuing the fine form he has had to show over the last three months to earn his fourth Ryder Cup appearance.

The former US Open champion had the perfect foil in Aberg, although they were assisted by some scrappy golf from Scheffler and Henley, who made only two birdies in the 15 holes played.

The Europeans won four of the first six holes and added another at the 9th to find themselves 4 up at the turn, and that lead increased when they made their sixth birdie of the session at the 12th.

The home pair pulled one back with a rare birdie at the long 13th, but a par at 15 was enough to complete a surprise big win just moments after McIlroy and Fleetwood had got the first blue on the board on the 14th.

Europe’s top pair were also in sparkling form, making five birdies over the first 8 holes to render Morikawa and English a little shell-shocked.

The American pair did stop the rot with a winning birdie at the 9th, but “Fleetwood Mac” restored their 5up lead with their sixth birdie at the 12th, and two solid pars were enough for victory.

Hovland and MacIntyre gave themselves a great chance to complete a day 1 foursomes sweep for the second Ryder Cup in a row, fighting back from 3 down to win three holes in a row from the 12th.

But Cantlay and Schauffele won the last two holes to lift the spirits of the locals heading into the afternoon session.

Friday Fourballs: USA 1.5-2.5 Europe

The US again won the first hole of the session, but Rahm's performance in the top match was world-class as he and Straka powered ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, who missed a hatful of putts throughout.

After Straka chipped in for birdie at the 2nd, Rahm took over and rattled off four birdies to give the visitors a 3up lead, although it was the Austrian who came good at the end, with birdies at 14 and 16 wrapping up another European victory.

That came moments after Cameron Young and Thomas outclassed Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, who had a baptism of fire as he and the Swede stumbled to a 6&5 defeat in match 3.

Fleetwood and Rose had to grind hard to keep up with Griffin and DeChambeau, who were 1 up after 10 holes before a Fleetwood birdie turned the match on it's head.

The FedExCup champion then birdied 14 and 16 for wins and, although DeChambeau pulled one back at 17, Rose stepped up to hole from 12 feet at the last to secure success for the English duo.

Another 3-1 session win looked on the cards with McIlroy and Lowry 2 up with 7 holes to play, but Cantlay inspired a brilliant fightback with some high-quality iron-play backed up with assured putting.

McIlroy and Lowry were far from consistent, but they pulled out some big shots when needed, although McIlroy's 12-foot putt for a point on the final green missed on the high side to ensure the only tied match of the first day.

McIlroy is FIRED UP!

Wow, what a reaction from McIlroy at the 6th.

He's hit a good second from the rough to 12 feet and is the last to putt for birdie.

Rory studies it for quite a while, and rolls it straight in the middle before letting out a huge "come on"!

19:45
Rahm and Straka go 2 up

Yep, another good putt finds the target, although Scheffler added to the list of misses.

Rahm converts a big 6-iron to 15 feet at the 233-yard 8th, where Scheffler raised the roof with his tee-shot to 8 feet.

But the world No 1 can't halve the hole, and Rahm and Straka go 2 up approaching the turn.

19:41
HUGE putts from Griffin and Rose!

Just as I mentioned some poor putts, Griffin and Rose just nailed a couple of belters on the seventh.

Young gets a chest-bump from Bryson after holing from 55 feet, only for Rose to steal a half with a perfect 40-footer.

Good chance missed for Aberg

We've seen quite a few below-average putts in the last hour or so, and Aberg is the latest.

The Swede has a five-foot putt to pull a hole back against Thomas and Young, but it doesn't drop and the USA stay 2up.

19:35
Let-off for McIlroy and Lowry

There's some unsavoury banter emanating from the crowd following match 4 now, let's hope this doesn't get out of hand.

Lowry's slider for birdie at the 6th is never high enough, and Burns - the No 1 putter on the PGA Tour - has a great chance from 12 feet up the hill.

But it misses to the right, and the match stays all square.

First signs of crowd trouble?

Maybe the alcohol is kicking in after lunch at Bethpage.

Aberg had to back off at the 5th, and now McIlroy is copping some flak as he lined up his second to the 5th.

He backed off, reset, and blocked it way right!

19:24
Bryson fluffs his lines

Good birdie chances at the 6th for Fleetwood and DeChambeau, who came out of his shoes with his drive!

Fleetwood knocked his second to 10 feet, Bryson punched out of the rough to 5 feet.

Tommy's grazed the edge, and Bryson seemed to push his putt for the win. Big escape for Europe there.

19:21
Thomas doubles US lead

Justin Thomas has not been in the best of form in recent weeks, but he's playing some super stuff today.

The two-time major winner drills his second to 4 feet at the 5th, and Aberg isn't far away either, just beyond the pin.

But Aberg misread his putt for birdie, and Thomas made no mistake to take him and Young 2up.

Irish irritation tactics?

Cantlay doesn't look happy about being asked to hole out for a tie on the long 4th.

McIlroy lagged a great putt from over 50 feet for a cast-iron birdie, with Cantlay less than 3 feet from the cup.

But the American rattles it in, although it's difficult to tell with his expression as to whether he was miffed or not!!

19:10
Spaun spurns good chance at the 6th

Rahm and Straka remain 1up after 6, where Straka and Spaun had the best birdie chances.

Straka was in the back fringe and his ball took an awful bobble as it left the putter face, leaving Spaun with 12 feet for the win.

But it's not a good stroke and misses on the low side.

Bryson birdie wins hole 5

Everyone at Bethpage will know who's just birdied the 5th!

Fleetwood hit a nice second from the rough to 15 feet, and DeChambeau got his a couple of feet closer.

Tommy missed, Bryson hit, USA 1up in match 2

18:57
McIlroy misses again, and the crowd love it!

Rory McIlroy's stunning tee-shot to the 3rd goes unrewarded, and it prompts maybe the loudest cheers we've heard at Bethpage today.

After Cantlay missed from 15 feet, Rory's 4-footer for the win doesn't catch enough of the left lip to drop, and that's a big let-off for the US pair.

18:55
So close from Spaun

The US Open champion has a chance to win the 5th after Straka was an inch away from holing from 45 feet, and it looks in all the way.

But it lips around the hole and stays out, and Rahm and Straka head to the 6th tee still 1up.

"The 3rd might be the toughest hole on the course"

Just as Sir Nick Faldo and co were describing the difficulty of the 213-yard 3rd hole, it appears nobody told Rory McIlroy how tough it is.

The Masters champ has absolutely nutted a mid-iron to 4 feet!!

Lowry pulls Europe level

McIlroy, perhaps still rattled by his mistake at the 1st, blocks his drive way right at the 2nd before atoning with a superb second to six feet.

Lowry looks perplexed after his approach comes up 25 feet short, but he rolls in the chance for a birdie that neither Burns or Cantlay can match.

Young and Thomas go close

The US have a couple of decent chances to win the short 3rd in match 7, where Aberg and Hojgaard have to settle for two-putt pars from distance.

Thomas and Young are both around 20 feet away, but Thomas is short on pace and Young's lips out. Hole halved

18:32
Oh, Rahmbo!

Rahm wallops a stunning second to inside 10 feet at the par-5 4th hole, but his putt for eagle and the win pulls up a couple of rolls short. Agonising for the big Spaniard

Young and Thomas move ahead

Justin Thomas looks in the zone this afternoon and zips a nice approach in close at the 2nd, but he doesn't need to putt as Cameron Young nails a 20-footer for the win.

18:28
Bunker magic from Fleetwood

Great save from Tommy at the 3rd, where he splashes out to gimme distance.

Bryson has 20 feet to win the hole, but it slide wide and we stay tied in this one.

18:27
Clumsy from McIlroy

Rory hits the best drive of the day at the 1st and almost finds the green, but he hits a poor chip that goes 6 feet long, and he pushes the birdie attempt wide after Lowry's 3rd from the fringe comes up short.

Cantlay spins his second to a couple of feet, but Burns gets up and down from the rough and USA go 1up in the final match.

Chance missed for Fleetwood and Rose

Griffin and DeChambeau both miss the green with their approaches to the 2nd, but Rose and Fleetwood hits poor wedges and neither are inside 25 feet.

The American pair both pitch to three feet, the Englishmen lag, and it's a half in par.
