Three-time champion Phil Mickelson has confirmed he will not compete in next week’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, citing an ongoing family health issue.

The 55-year-old announced the decision on Thursday via social media, revealing he will step away from professional golf for an extended period of time.

Mickelson chose not to disclose further details but emphasised the importance of prioritising his family at this time.

In a statement, the LIV Golf superstar said he holds deep respect for Augusta National and described Masters week as “the most special of the year,” adding that he would be watching from afar and wishing the field well.

Mickelson’s full statement read: “Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter.

“I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”

Mickelson’s absence continues a limited 2026 schedule.

Lefty has already missed several LIV Golf events this season due to the same personal matter, making just one appearance in South Africa last month, where he finished tied for 48th.

His withdrawal also marks a notable moment in Masters history.

For the first time since 1994, neither Mickelson nor Tiger Woods will feature in the field.

Woods recently confirmed he too would miss the tournament following an arrest for suspected DUI and subsequent decision to step away for treatment.

Newly-released video footage emerged of Woods being arrested earlier today.

Mickelson, a fan favourite at Augusta, claimed his green jackets in 2004, 2006 and 2010.

While he has not added to that tally in recent years, he has remained competitive at the venue, recording runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2023, as well as a tie for third in 2013.

The Masters field currently stands at 91 players and could increase to 92 depending on the outcome of this week’s Valero Texas Open. The winner of the tournament will qualify for Augusta if they are not already exempt.
