WATCH: Rory McIlroy out of US Open contention with early double bogey

Rory McIlroy already had plenty to do heading into the final round of the US Open at Pebble Beach, but he played himself out of contention as early as the second hole after making a disastrous double bogey.

McIlroy trailed by five strokes standing on the second tee but quickly saw that deficit increased to seven after making a mess of things when finding the thick rough off the tee.

From there, the Ulsterman hacked out but could only find the bunker in front of him, and he then proceeded to find the greenside bunker with his third shot.

McIlroy then splashed out to eight feet and missed the putt before tapping in for a double.
