Bridgestone Golf is releasing black golf balls, because why not?

The Tour B X and RX balls are getting limited-edition stealth editions, priced at a cool $100 per dozen.

Because finding your ball in the rough isn't hard enough already, right?

That's apparently the logic behind Bridgestone's latest limited-edition release, which will see the brand's tour-level Tour B X and Tour B RX golf balls given an all-black makeover and sold in extremely limited quantities.

Why, you ask? Firstly, and putting all scoffing to the side, this is a fun, subversive spin on a an industry-standard equipment formula from the Japanese brand, and one very much for the collectors.  At least, we assume there won't be many people mad enough to try and play a full 18 with a black golf ball unless they're doing so for a YouTube video.

There is, however, a little more method behind the murdered-out madness. The goal of the release is actually to draw attention to Bridgestone's latest breakthrough in ball technology: the VeloSurge Core-Mantle Integration, which Bridgestone says helped players of all levels see an increase of 2.3 mph in ball speed and 8.7 yards in distance in testing, as well as a higher MOI score indicating better accuracy.

VeloSurge, of course, isn't visible underneath the cast white coat of a normal Bridgestone Tour B golf ball. The black finish brings this interior technology to the surface in a thoroughly unique way – albeit one you'd be pretty brave to actually take out on the course.

"The new TOUR B already has three wins on Tour, plus a win on LIV and another on the Champions Tour, because it delivers measurable gains in ball speed and distance," says Bridgestone Senior Marketing Manager Adam Rehberg. "This limited-edition drop is our bold celebration of the ball's tour-level performance that looks as distinctive as it plays."

Adding to the sense of exclusivity is the price. Coloured cast balls are, naturally, pretty expensive to make in limited quantities, and this is a one-time-only sort of deal. As such, a dozen of these will set you back $99.99 – almost double a standard box of Bridgestone Tour balls.

If you're still keen all the same, you can grab a box for yourself while they're available at Bridgestone's website from 9AM ET on May 19.
