While much has been made of just how expensive drivers are these days, the price of putters has, likewise, crept up in such a way that some price tags truly boggle the mind.

With the best putters (particularly those in the zero torque category) approaching £500, a growing need has emerged for new and innovative putter ranges that offer high-end performance at a price more approachable for the everyday player.

Recently we've seen the likes of Cleveland and Wilson excel in this area, however never one to miss a trick, TaylorMade has also announced a major refresh of its entry-level putter range, reviving the name of one of its ranges in the process.

The SYSTM2 range pays homage to the System2 driver range of the early '90s, and is made up of a new range of five new putter shapes ranging from traditional blades to higher MOI mallet designs. The most attractive part, however, is the price, with each model retailing for just £219.

To keep costs down, TaylorMade manufacture the putters using a process called metal injection moulding, which allows them to create a range of unique shapes with exceptional consistency and weight distribution without having to mill each putter individually from a block of metal.

MIM has become increasingly popular among manufacturers of affordable putters in recent times, with Cobra and Wilson also adopting the technology to keep their putters more competitively priced.

Five putter shapes will be offered in the SYSTM2 range, with three blade shapes and two mallets. They go as follows

  • Soto: Soft, flowing lines with rounded bumpers for a classic profile
  • Juno: A more squared back blade for golfers who prefer defined edges.
  • Del Monte: A wide-body blade option with an extended back for higher MOI
  • Bandon: A forked mid-mallet
  • Ardmore: A squared off, full-profile mid-mallet

All three blades come in either L-neck or Short Curve hosel options, while the mid-mallets have L-neck or single bend options, bringing the number of total configurations available to 10.

To ensure a premium feel, TaylorMade have dialled in the materials and finishing to better replicate the sensation of putting with a putter double the price.

The brand has elected to use a softer 304 stainless steel for a more cushioned sensation at impact, while the face is fly cut, milled and scored with a saw-cutter to provide a finish more akin to that of a traditional milled-face putter.

The two-tone finish divides the putter into gunmetal grey and black, helping players frame the ball better at address, while the surfaces have a HydroBlast finish to retain durability through many a round.
