Will Zalatoris has been forced to withdraw from this week's season-ending Tour Championship as a result of a back injury, and he will now also miss the Presidents Cup next month.

Zalatoris withdrew during last week's BMW Championship due to a back injury and it has now come to light from his medical team that his back issue is the result of two herniated discs.

"Will Zalatoris has withdrawn from the Tour Championship due to a back injury," reads a statement on the PGA Tour Communications Twitter page.

"As a result of his withdrawal, if all 29 players finish 72 holes, Zalatoris will finish 30th in the FedEx Cup, which receives $500,000 in bonus money.

"Starting strokes for the remaining 29 players will not be affected."

The American, who landed his maiden PGA Tour title two weeks ago at the FedEx St Jude Championship, would have held every chance of winning the FedEx Cup and $18 million bonus given he was starting out in third place on the leaderboard.

Zalatoris would have started on 7-under par and three shots behind Scottie Scheffler in the staggered start at East Lake.

Zalatoris will now also miss out on a Presidents Cup debut against the Internationals at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte next month.

"After Will's withdrawal from the BMW Championship on Saturday, his medical team determined that the source of his back pain is two herniated discs," said Zalatoris' manager Allen Hobbs.

"Unfortunately, this means that Will is unable to play this week at the Tour Championship.

"He is also very disappointed that he will not have the opportunity to play in next month's Presidents Cup, where he was hoping to play for captain [Davis] Love and represent the United States.

"Will would like to thank his fans, sponsors, the Tour, and his team for all of their support.

"He is fully focused on getting healthy and back onto the course as soon as he is able."
