Former European Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell claimed he has underachieved on LIV Golf after he set up a golden chance to secure his first victory on the breakaway tour.

McDowell was among the first wave of recruits to join the PIF-backed league in 2022.

The former U.S. Open champion has endured a mixed bag of results but has an incredible chance to secure his first title at LIV Golf's stop in Virginia.

McDowell went round the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in 5-under 66 on Saturday to trail Anirban Lahiri by two strokes after 36 holes.

Former World No.1 Martin Kaymer (67) and two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson (65) are also inside the top 10.

Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and individual standings leader Joaquin Niemann also have a chance for victory but will need something special tomorrow.

"I'm excited to be up there," McDowell told reporters.

"I'm excited to give myself probably my first opportunity on LIV. I've underachieved greatly so far in my career out here.

"Certainly expect more of myself, and opportunities like this are kind of what I've been working towards and kind of what I feel still inside of me.

"Looking forward to being out there tomorrow and try and put myself in position, try and see if we can get to this guy beside me.

"I'm excited to be where I want to be. I haven't really given myself any opportunities on this tour yet."

Lahiri, who has four runner-up finishes without a win on LIV Golf, shot a brilliant 7-under 64 to take the lead.

The 37-year-old made seven birdies without a blemish on the scorecard.

That included a 39-foot par putt on the 16th hole to salvage his momentum.

He also got out of a jail on the 18th, saving par from the rough.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the final round will begin at 8.05am local time.
