Patrick Reed says he felt like it took 'too long' to claim his first title on the breakaway LIV Golf League

Reed beat three opponents in a playoff at Maridoe Golf Club on Sunday to claim victory at the PIF-backed league's stop in Dallas

The 34-year-old American and England's Paul Casey, South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen and Japan's Jinichiro Kozuma all finished on six-under par after 54 holes.

Reed, who held a three-shot lead going into the final round, then sealed the deal with a birdie putt on the first playoff hole.

"I don't like hearing those numbers," Reed told reporters when he was reminded it took him 41 starts on LIV to enter the winner's circle.

"It took too long I felt like, but to check two things off and only win for the first time on LIV and also doing it in my home state means a lot.

"It's just been I felt like a long time coming to win out here. I felt like the game has been solid.

"Even like today, you always deal with adversity throughout every tournament you play.

"It's just how you're going to respond and handle it. Luckily I was able to kind of right the ship and get in a playoff and make that putt at the end."

England's Tyrrell Hatton briefly held the lead on the back nine but came unstuck at the 12th with a double bogey.

His teammate Jon Rahm finished outside the top 10 for the first time since his switch to LIV in December 2023.

Sergio Garcia finished outside the points but did enough to punch his ticket to The Open at Royal Portrush next month.

Garcia had not entered Final Qualifying and told GolfMagic he was intent earning his spot in the field by being the leading LIV player not otherwise exempt.

As for Reed, he will believe that if he performs well at The Open then he has a case to make the US Ryder Cup team.

US skipper Keegan Bradley has already made it clear he has no issue selecting LIV players and is likely to have at least two recruits on his 12-man roster at Bethpage Black in Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau

Reed poured cold water on suggestions he should be thinking about the Ryder Cup just yet.

"Leading into the Open and to come out and win against a field like this gives me all the confidence in the world going forward," he said.
