Two more PGA Tour winners withdraw from Wyndham Championship

Daniel Berger and Garrick Higgo have become the latest players to withdraw from this week's Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

The Wyndham Championship marks the final regular-season event on the PGA Tour before next week's FedEx Cup Playoffs, where only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

Berger, who sits 58th in the FedEx Cup standings, has already secured his place in the Playoffs despite enduring a difficult run of form. 

The four-time PGA Tour winner has missed the cut in four of his last five starts, most recently at The Open, and has not competed since.

The PGA Tour does not require players to provide a reason when withdrawing before a tournament begins, and Berger has not explained his decision to WD.

It remains to be seen whether Berger's absence since The Open three weeks ago is the result of further injury or simply a decision to take additional time to rest and prepare for next week's FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The 33-year-old American made an encouraging start to the season when he finished runner-up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in March. 

That marked his best PGA Tour finish since claiming the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2021.

Berger spent 19 months on the sidelines after suffering a serious lower-back injury in 2022 and did well to work his way back into Playoff contention this season. 

However, his recent dip in form has stalled that momentum heading into the FedEx Cup.

Higgo WDs from Wyndham 

South Africa's Garrick Higgo has also withdrawn from the Wyndham Championship, bringing his FedEx Cup campaign to an end. 

Higgo sits 163rd in the standings and was already out of contention to qualify for the Playoffs.

It has been a frustrating season for the 27-year-old, who made headlines at the PGA Championship in May after missing his opening-round tee time and receiving a two-shot penalty. 

The two-time PGA Tour winner later confirmed he had parted ways with his caddie following the mix-up over when he was due on the 1st tee at Aronimink. 

England's David Skinns, who is 144th in the FedEx Cup standings, replaces Berger in the field, while Jimmy Stanger, ranked 135th, comes in for Higgo.

The latest withdrawals follow those of Patrick Cantlay and last week's first-time PGA Tour winner Michael Thorbjornsen, who both pulled out on Monday. 

Like Berger, both players had already done enough to secure their places in next week's FedEx Cup Playoffs.
