Scottie Scheffler's miserable Ryder Cup gets worse with all-time unlucky break

Scottie Scheffler's endured a terrible piece of luck during the Saturday afternoon fourballs session at Bethpage Black in New York.

Scottie Scheffler has endured a forgettable Ryder Cup so far.

The undisputed World No.1 arrived at Bethpage Black expected to lead the charge for Keegan Bradley's United States team in their bid to win back the Cup they lost two years ago in Italy.

But by the time he teed it up on Saturday afternoon - with the US trailing by a daunting five points - he had failed to register a single point for Team USA.

It drew unwanted Tiger Woods comparisons as he extended his miserable record in the foursomes to a disastrous and perplexing 0-4-0 in the format.

Captain Bradley decided to send out the reigning Open champion with Bryson DeChambeau in the fourballs. They were up against Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood

There is no denying Scheffler has been poor, but he has also been unlucky at times. Take, for example, what happened on the short par-4 10th.

By the time they had made the turn, the American duo were down by one.

An inspired Rose couldn't stop making birdies. He even walked in one from five from about five feet out at the 8th hole.

Rose hit an average approach but Fleetwood sent his second shot right next to the pin and munched on a chicken wrap.

Scheffler was more accurate. So accurate, in fact, that his golf ball hit the flag stick and rolled back into the rough.

Watch the moment here:

Brutal. Scheffler could only manage a par from there.

The aforementioned Fleetwood converted his birdie putt and DeChambeau missed his attempt for a three.

It gave the Europeans a 2UP advantage with eight holes left to play.

About 30 minutes later, the scoreboard was almost entirely all blue. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, who were subjected to appalling personal abuse by the home fans, were leading by one.

Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka were up two over JJ Spaun and Xander Schauffele.

Whilst Matthew Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton held a slender lead over Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay.

If Scheffler and the US are to complete a remarkable comeback, then their luck needs to change soon.

Doesn't look like it will, though.

Scheffler denies being hard to partner

Scottie Scheffler has dominated the men's game for more than three years.

Four major wins, numerous PGA Tour titles and even an Olympic gold medal sit inside his trophy cabinet.

But for some reason he appears to struggle at the Ryder Cup.

He made his debut at Whistling Straits in 2021 and secured 2.5 points for Team USA in their record 19-9 home win.  But he did not play foursomes.

Two years ago, Scheffler suffered two heavy defeats in the format at Marco Simone in Rome.

Scheffler and his good pal Sam Burns were defeated 4&3 by Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

Then he and Brooks Koepka were humiliated 9&7 by Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland. It reduced Scheffler to tears.

Before this Ryder Cup began, Scheffler told reporters here that he doesn't worry about expectations.

Instead, he focuses on preparation. He also said that he doesn't believe he is difficult to partner.

Some have suggested it as a daunting prospect for any US player to team up with the golfer who is now widely regarded as the best player since Woods.

"I'd like to think that I'm not difficult to pair with people," said Scheffler.

"I've had different partners over the years and have had some success. I would definitely not put myself in that category."
