Mickelson +8 (18)
Not to be for Phil Mickelson.
Unsurprisingly, he studied his birdie putt for a good while.
But he watches his golf ball slide by the left edge.
This could be his final US Open...

But he watches his golf ball slide by the left edge.
This could be his final US Open...
Mickelson +8, C. Smith +8, B. Harman +6 (18*)
Phil Mickelson watches his playing partner Cameron Smith hack back into play.
Cam needs a birdie also to make the cut.
Mickelson is focussed and sends a towering iron shot straight over the pin.
His golf ball eventually settles about 20 feet from the cup...
Mickelson +8 (17)
Only a few moments ago Phil Mickelson was comfortably inside the cut mark.
But he's just made a complete meal of the par-4 17th and trudges off the green with a double bogey.
It means he now needs to birdie the last to make the cut.
Will this be the last we see of Phil the thrill in a US Open?
McIlroy +6 (18)
Rory McIlroy knocks his approach at the last very close and jars the birdie putt to make the cut.
Is that a smile on his face?
Lawrence +1 (13*)
Thriston Lawrence is all over the place here.
The big South African began his back nine well with a birdie at the 1st but has since dropped four shots in three holes.
His tee shot finds trouble at the 5th and he can only hack out.
Another dropped shot looms...
McIlroy +7 (17)
Rory McIlroy splashes out from the sand at the 17th to leave an 11-foot birdie putt.
He can't convert and will head up the last just about inside the cut mark.
Can he hit the fairway? He likes this one. Right down the middle.
McIlroy +7 (17)
Frustration boils over for Rory McIlroy at the 17th.
His tee shot finds the bunker but the Northern Irishman is not happy at all.
He smashes the tee box marker to smitherines...
Schauffele +5, DeChambeau +10 (8*)
Bryson DeChambeau does extremely well to make a par at the long par-3 8th.
Schauffele can't make his par though.
Spaun -2 (72)
JJ Spaun is faced with a tricky chip at the last after going long of the pin.
He's far too tentative and leaves a 26-footer for par.
It's a decent effort but rolls by about three feet, which he tidies up.
Lawrence -1 (12*)
Thriston Lawrence finds the Church Pew bunker on the third hole and pays the price.
He chops out and leaves himself 11 feet for par but it doesn't drop.
Schauffele +4, DeChambeau +10 (16*)
And just like that, the reigning champion is done.
Another par putt rolls by the cup on the 7th hole.
DeChambeau drops to 10-over. He needs a miracle...
McIlroy +7 (15)
Rory McIlroy manages to find a birdie from nowhere at the 15th.
The Masters champion drills a 20-footer and suddenly he's back on the right side of the projected cut.
Spaun -3 (17)
JJ Spaun takes a swipe at the green at the par-4 17th and comes up short and left of the green.
He takes a swipe and his ball, eventually, stops about 25 feet from the cup.
He'll take a two-putt from there, but drills it to move to 3-under and back into a share of the lead.
Schauffele +4, DeChambeau +8 (14*)
We mentioned DeChambeau had a long putt for bogey.
Well, the reigning champion couldn't hole the 18-footer to limit the damage and somehow he's 8-over par.
His playing partner also drops a shot but is comfortably inside the cut mark.
T. Lawrence -3 (10)
Thriston Lawrence raced out of the blocks with birdies at 11, 12, 13 but dropped four shots in five holes to tumble back down the leaderboard.
He's managed to stop the bleeding somewhat thanks to a birdie at the 1st.
Spaun -3 (15)
Mistake from JJ Spaun at the 15th.
The American's stroke over a six-foot par putt doesn't look terribly convincing...
DeChambeau +6 (13*)
Huge problems for the reigning champion now, who has just sent his approach at the fifth hole into the greenside bunker. It looks buried.
Oh, and he needs to hole that to make his par...
Scott E (14)
Adam Scott bounces back with a birdie having dropped a stroke at the 13th.
T. Fleetwood +6 (14)
The Englishman started on the back nine today and has just reached the par-4 5th.
He does well to tidy up for par from about six feet.
Big stretch incoming...
Mickelson +4 (11)
A birdie for Phil the thrill at the 11th keeps Mickelson comfortably inside the cut mark.
McIlroy +8 (12*)
Rory McIlroy is not a happy man. His approach at the par-5 12th is left off the club face and heads straight into the five-inch rough short and left of the green.
Cue club toss.
"He looks like he needs a break," observes Sky Sports' Paul McGinley.
The top 60 and ties will have a weekend tee time at Oakmont.
Currently, the projected cut is 7-over.
Scott +1 (13)
Adam Scott drops a stroke at the par-3 13th after failing to get up and down from the bunker.
Now only FIVE players under par.
Here's a leaderboard update:
1 | JJ Spaun | -4 | 13 |
2 | Sam Burns | -3 | 65 |
2 | Thriston Lawrence | -3 | 7* |
4 | Thomas Detry | -2 | 9* |
5 | Viktor Hovland | -1 | 68 |
Scheffler +4 (F)
World No.1 Scheffler has headed straight to the range to grind on his game.
He's not happy at all.
In fact he's fuming...
