US Open 2025 Live: Second round leaderboard and updates from golf's third major of the season at famed Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

US OPEN ROUND THREE LIVE

Welcome to live second round updates from the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

Sam Burns made the big move of the day with a stunning 5-under 65.

To put that round in perspective, it was some nine shots better than the field average on day two.

The six-time PGA Tour winner vaulted up to 3-under par to assume a narrow one-shot lead over 18-hole leader JJ Spaun, who carded a 72.

Burns, who finished runner-up to Ryan Fox at the RBC Canadian Open last weekend, was a 66/1 tip from GolfMagic Editor Andy Roberts at the start of the week.

Viktor Hovland was another player to make a big push during Friday's second round.

Hovland carded a solid 68 to move to 1-under par.

Burns, Spaun and Hovland are the only three players in the red thru 36 holes.

Adam Scott and Ben Griffin make up the top five on level par.

Elsewhere, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler failed to fire with a 71 and he looks on from 4-over par.

That is safe for the weekend at least.

Scheffler headed straight to the range after his round and looked visibly frustrated with the state of his game as he ranted in front of his coach and caddie.

Rounds took over 5 hours 30 minutes in the second round, and that frustrated a lot of fans

Rory McIlroy narrowly made it through to the weekend after making birdie on the final hole for a 72.

McIlroy is nine shots off the pace though on 6-over par.

He lost his cool not once but twice in the second round.

McIlroy tomahawked his club on 12 and then smashed a tee box marker on 17.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau failed to progress to the weekend.

He slumped to a 77 to finish well down the field on 10-over par.

DeChambeau was one of a number of surprising names to miss the cut.

Some reaction from the World No.1

Scottie Scheffler has been talking to the media after his second round.

He says it was a real mental battle today.

"I'm definitely not out of the tournament," he said.

"With the way I was hitting it, today was easily a day I could have been going home and battled pretty hard to stay in there.

"I'm four over. We'll see what the lead is after today."

19:46
JJ Spaun now leads by two shots

Spaun -5 (6)

JJ Spaun follows his safe par at the 5th with a dart at the par-3 6th.

19:39
DeChambeau gets one back

Schauffele E, DeChambeau +3, Ballester +7 (3)

Bryson DeChambeau gets a much-needed birdie at his third hole, the par-5 12th, courtesy of an unbelievable two-putt.

The reigning champ elects to putt from the fringe, some 120 feet away from the pin.

And it's perfectly judged. He tucks away the six-footer with no problems.

19:32
JJ Spaun ticks off another par

Spaun -4 (5)

JJ Spaun's caddie tells the golfer to play a stock draw off the US Open sign behind the fifth green.

JJ Spaun retakes the lead

Spaun -4 (4)

JJ Spaun reaches the fourth green in two hits and walks away with a birdie to take the lead again.

19:18
Rose nightmare

Lowry +11, McIlroy +6, Rose +9 (2)

Justin Rose makes a complete hash of the 2nd hole.

He takes a drop from the cart path, clatters a tree and flies back down towards him.

His golf ball is stopped, eventually, by a gentleman on a mobility scooter that couldn't get out of the way fast enough.

Eventually, Rose finds the green but is miles away. He'll be happy with a double there as it could have been so much worse.

McIlroy, meanwhile, had a decent look at birdie but ended up having to save par from 10 feet.

And he's in trouble again at the 3rd...

MacIntyre +1 (1*)

Adam Scott is playing his 96th consecutive major championship this week.

He'd like to win another one and in truth still has the pedigree to get the job done.

Could this be his week? He's going well so far today.
